Jimmy Butler Postpones Meetings With Rival Teams After Getting Max Offer From Bulls

Jun 30, 2015 11:39 AM

Jimmy Butler has reportedly postponed meetings with rival teams after receiving a max qualifying offer from the Chicago Bulls.

Butler had planned on meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Dallas Mavericks.

Butler can sign a five-year deal worth more than $90 million.

Butler is attempting to determine how many years to sign a new deal with the Bulls for as reports earlier surfaced that he preferred a short-term deal.

Report: 76ers Ordered To Send $3M To Pelicans For Not Disclosing Holiday's Injuries

Jun 28, 2015 10:26 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers were ordered to send the New Orleans Pelicans $3 million in compensation for not fully disclosing the injury history of Jrue Holiday, according to sources.

The 76ers traded Holiday on draft night of 2013 to the Pelicans for Nerlens Noel.

The sources said Holiday played with stress fractures in his lower right leg during his final season with the Sixers. However, the sources said, those injuries weren't fully disclosed to the Pelicans.

Sam Hinkie declined to comment, but a Sixers team source disputed the allegation.

"That's not true," the Sixers source said.

According to the other two sources, the Sixers are now trying to receive a payment from the Los Angeles Lakers for allegedly misinforming them about Andrew Bynum.

76ers Legitimately Concerned About Joel Embiid's Right Foot

Jun 27, 2015 10:08 AM

Sam Hinkie said selecting Jahlil Okafor third overall was not connected to the situation with Joel Embiid's injured foot.

But the Philadelphia 76ers appear to be legitimately bewildered and worried about Embiid's injury.

"I'd like to think we'd have had the courage to do it anyway," Hinkie responded when asked if he would have still selected Okafor. "I knew and it's hard to unknow where things stood with Joel, but I'd like to think we'd have the courage anyway."

A CT scan of Embiid's foot about a week ago led to the Sixers making the Saturday night release saying things weren't as healed as "anticipated."

"[Embiid] feels really good," Hinkie said. "That's part of what makes this, um, maybe confusing is the right word.

"It's certainly confusing for Joel. He said, 'I can't believe how good I feel and I've felt great for a while.' It seems hard to believe that something is wrong."

Embiid had the surgery on June 20, 2014, which makes it more than 12 months and there are still issues.

"I'll give a timeline that might help clear some things up but might also help show why we're looking so hard to try to understand," Hinkie said. "Joel we've watched like a hawk in rehab every day of the year.

"The nature of navicular injuries and the nature of stress fractures is that you see these slow improvements and then you slow [rehabilitation] down and check things.

"Anytime you get any kind of negative feedback, you unload, slow down and re-assess.

"As part of that, we have a set of pro-active MRIs on Joel, and each of those we sent out to a variety of doctors both internally and externally and ask, "What do you think?' We get the consensus responses and move from there."

There is a feeling the 76ers are being overly cautious since Embiid is symptom-free.

Hinkie said he does not "see how [Embiid] is going to play in the Summer League with the conversations we've been having."

Celtics Prepared To Trade Up With 76ers If Jahlil Okafor Slips

Jun 25, 2015 3:15 PM

The Boston Celtics are prepared to send a significant trade package to the Philadelphia 76ers at No. 3 if Jahlil Okafor slips.

Okafor is in play for both the Minnesota Timberwolves at No. 1 and particularly the Los Angeles Lakers at No. 2. The Lakers are also considering D'Angelo Russell and Kristaps Porzingis with the second overall pick.

The Celtics have a considerable numbers of assets to make trading up viable and various reports have indicated they are including Marcus Smart in proposals.

76ers Believed To Have Stayed Within Technical Framework Of CBA

Jun 24, 2015 9:41 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers are unlikely to face any punishment for possible violations of the "spirit" of the collective bargaining agreement.

RealGM's Shams Charania reported this week that the NBPA was investigating the situation.

The Sixers have approached their salary-cap requirements from a unique perspective in the last two seasons under Sam Hinkie and stayed within the technical framework of the agreement.

"They did not violate any rules, just the spirit of the rule," one league source said. "It's something the union will look to change for the future."

NBPA Looking Into 76ers' Salary Handling Under CBA

Jun 23, 2015 2:23 PM

The NBA players union is researching the Philadelphia 76ers for any possible breach of the collective bargaining agreement, sources told RealGM.

The NBPA told agents in a meeting on Monday that it will actively look into the 76ers’ handling of the CBA, such as salary distributions, the cap floor and contract format loopholes. For the NBPA, Philadelphia’s approach over the past several seasons may not be a technical violation of collective bargaining as much as it is one of the spirit of negotiating under the CBA.

An NBPA spokesperson confirmed Tuesday the union’s plan to pursue the 76ers’ issue if there is a violation found.

Over the past two seasons, the 76ers have compiled a 37-127 record, staying below the 90 percent salary floor for majority of the campaigns before late season signings or trades.

Dario Saric Won't Join 76ers In 15-16

Jun 22, 2015 10:45 AM

Dario Saric won't play for the Philadelphia 76ers next season.

Saric was the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and is under a three-year contract with Anadolu Efes of Turkey.

The Sixers reportedly have attempted to negotiate a buyout over the past month, but Saric's buyout is too expensive to make the move practical, according to sources.

Saric has a player option on his contract that will technically allow him to come to the NBA for the 2016-17 season. However, there will be a big incentive for him to stay in Turkey for a third year and wait until the 2017-18 season to play in the NBA.

Saric won't be bound by the rookie scale if he waits three years to come to the NBA as Nikola Mirotic did last summer with the Chicago Bulls.

Joel Embiid Could Miss Entire 15-16 Season

Jun 15, 2015 2:19 PM

Joel Embiid may miss the beginning of next season and could be out for all of 15-16 after a setback in the healing of his right foot.

"He was their guy," said the executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "They were hoping he was a franchise player. If he's not a franchise player, their whole plan is gone. . . . If Embiid can't play or if he can't reach a superstar level, their plan is really in trouble."

Sam Hinkie said in a statement Saturday that a recent CT scan, performed in Los Angeles, revealed less healing than anticipated at this point. His recovery time was expected to be five to eight months. But the Sixers handled his rehabilitation with caution and he was expected to sit out the season.

"Our priority remains providing Joel with every opportunity to ensure he has a long and successful NBA career," Hinkie said Saturday. ". . . We will continue to consult with the experienced team of doctors who have been an integral part of his evaluation, while also engaging in dialogue with a broader set of experts and specialists."

Embiid is not expected to participate in Summer League.

"I don't think anyone [around the league] is surprised at all," the NBA executive said. "Cleveland and Milwaukee [which picked first and second in last summer's draft] would not consider him because of the foot and back injuries."

Another league source said Embiid's latest setback would not influence the Sixers' plan in the June 25 draft.

Joel Embiid Has Setback With Foot Injury, Receiving Further Evaluations

Jun 14, 2015 12:16 AM

Joel Embiid has suffered a setback with his right foot injury after missing the entire season, the Philadelphia 76ers announced Saturday.

Embiid and Sixers personnel traveled to Los Angeles for a series of routine exams and a standard CT scan on his right foot revealed less healing than anticipated, according to Sam Hinkie.

"Our priority remains providing Joel with every opportunity to ensure he has a long and successful NBA career, and as such, these findings cause us to pause and reassess his current activities," Hinkie said in a statement. "Together with Joel and his representatives, we will continue to consult with the experienced team of doctors who have been an integral part of his evaluations, while also engaging in dialogue with a broader set of experts and specialists.

"Discussions regarding the appropriate next steps are currently ongoing and we will share an update once it becomes available."
