Oden Makes First Public Appearance Since Surgery

Sep 28, 2007 12:46 AM

Top NBA draft pick Greg Oden doesn't remember much from immediately after knee surgery. He was with his mother at home when he found out how serious it was.

"I kinda looked at my mom and said, 'I'm out for the season? You kidding me?' " he said.

Oden will be on crutches for six more weeks. Full recovery likely will take six to 12 months. He has started swimming, and a machine gently bends his knee for six hours a day.

Oden was at the Trail Blazers' practice facility on Thursday on crutches and with his surgically repaired left knee wrapped in ice.

Except for a videotaped blog entry, it was the 7-footer's first public appearance since undergoing microfracture surgery on Sept. 13. He will miss the season rehabbing.

Oden: I Hope To Be Better Than Ever

Sep 22, 2007 9:00 AM

A week after undergoing season-ending knee surgery, Greg Oden is recovering -- mentally and physically -- at his Tualatin home.

Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., said Friday that Oden has not experienced any complications from the microfracture surgery he had on his right knee last week and is recuperating comfortably.

"His spirits are a little down, just like anyone's would be," Conley said. "But he seems to be doing fine."

Thursday night, Oden made his first public comments since undergoing surgery, posting a one-minute, 20-second first-person video clip on his yardbarker.com Web log. In the clip, Oden thanked fans for their support, vowed to return and offered a brief glimpse of his surgically repaired knee.

"It's gonna be a long rehab time, but when I come back, I hope to be better than ever," Oden said in the video. "And I'm going to work real hard. Thank you for still supporting me."

?They told my agent that they were highly impressed and that I was the best on the floor,? Christie told RealGM.  ?They also said I was in excellent shape and ready to play.  I?m very happy with the outcome.?

Christie also has a workout scheduled with the Seattle Supersonics in the coming days.

?I?ve worked very hard to get back to 100% and I?m very excited with how I played in Jamal Crawford?s summer league here in Seattle this summer,? said Christie.  ?I?m very ready to get back out there on the court this season.?

Portland Scout Suffers Heart Attack

Sep 19, 2007 10:50 AM

Bob Burke, a Portland Trail Blazers advance scout who served as coach Nate McMillan's assistant for one season, collapsed over the weekend during a coaching clinic in Palm Springs, Calif., and is recovering from a heart attack in a hospital there.

Roughly 15 minutes into his presentation Saturday at the Palm Springs Coaches Clinic, Burke, 61, fell to the ground and had CPR administered to him by three area high school basketball coaches. According to The Desert Sun, which first reported the incident, Burke's breathing and pulse stopped twice in the three minutes it took for paramedics to arrive.

Eventually, however, Burke's heart resumed beating and he was rushed to the hospital.

According to The Desert Sun, Burke is breathing without life support and talking basketball inside Desert Regional Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit.

Oden Hurt Knee Getting Off Couch?

Sep 17, 2007 12:10 PM

The Blazers still aren't sure how or when Greg Oden injured his right knee. On his blog, Oden mentioned that he first felt pain getting off his couch two weeks ago. Pritchard said Oden played pickup basketball with teammates Sept. 5, then did a full running workout on a track the next day. That's when the team noticed swelling.

"The honest truth is that we don't know," Pritchard said. "It could have happened when he was playing basketball, it could have happened when he was running the track . . . we just don't know."

Pritchard: Oden's Knees Weren't A Concern

Sep 16, 2007 10:52 AM

General manager Kevin Pritchard acknowledged this weekend that the Trail Blazers had questions about the health of Greg Oden before they selected him with the No. 1 pick in the June NBA draft, but that his right knee was not among them.

Oden had season-ending micro-fracture surgery on his right knee Thursday, stunning the organization.

"We had worries about a lot of things, but not his knees," Pritchard said.

Nearly all the Blazers' pre-draft worries were tempered when Oden's agents allowed the Blazers to perform a series of magnetic resonance imagings on various parts of Oden's body, including his wrists, hips and knees.

The MRI on his knees taken June 20 -- eight days before the draft -- came back "absolutely pristine," Pritchard said.

GM: Oden Said I'm Sorry

Sep 14, 2007 10:59 AM

In one of his first conversations after Thursday's surgery, Greg Oden was apologizing.

"He said, 'I'm sorry,' 15 to 20 times," Portland general
manager Kevin Pritchard said. "He felt the weight of the world, the weight of the organization. That was challenging for me as a general manager to see a kid say he's sorry for something he can't control."

The procedure on Oden's right knee is expected to cause the No. 1 pick in June's NBA draft to miss this season, the Trail Blazers said. They estimate recovery time for the 2005 Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Basketball at six to 12 months.

Oden Has Micro Fracture Surgery; Likely Done For Season

Sep 13, 2007 2:31 PM

An exploratory arthroscopic surgery performed on Greg Oden today revealed cartilage damage to the Portland Trail Blazers rookie?s right knee. Oden is likely to miss the 2007-08 NBA season.

"Greg had an arthroscopy and a micro fracture surgery today," said team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who preformed the surgery. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with micro fracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage. There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from micro fracture surgery."

Oden is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. Recovery time from micro fracture surgery varies from person to person, but generally takes between six and 12 months for full recovery.

"Certainly this is a setback, but our future is still incredibly bright," said Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard. "Is it disappointing? Yes. However, this is a great core of talent and players of strong character and will continue to be."

Oden Lost For The Season

Sep 13, 2007 2:07 PM

Greg Oden, the Portland Trail Blazers' No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, will miss the 2007-2008 season after knee surgery on Thursday, two league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Oden, the 7-footer out of Ohio State, underwent exploratory surgery on his right knee on Thursday in Vancouver. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear, but Oden, one of the most celebrated young players in years, will be lost for the season.

The Blazers are expected to make an announcement shortly.

Early Reports Suggest Oden Will Be Sidelined For Six Weeks

Sep 13, 2007 11:09 AM

The Blazers should know more about Greg Oden's injured right knee on Thursday, when the 7-foot rookie center undergoes exploratory arthroscopic surgery. The procedure, which shouldn't last more than an hour, probably will sideline Oden for at least six weeks -- longer if doctors find serious damage.

Don Roberts, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in disorders of the knee and sports medicine, will perform the minor surgery at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver. Roberts, who has been the Blazers' team physician since 1994, has extensive experience in knee arthroscopy, including reconstruction and treatment of anterior cruciate ligaments, meniscus and articular cartilage.
