Blazers Score With Six Men On Court

Dec 31, 2008 8:39 AM

The Blazers handed the Celtics their third loss in four games on Tuesday night, but even more surprising was their scoring with six men on the court.

With 10.3 seconds left in the second quarter, the Blazers took to the floor and scored with six men on the court. The refs didn't catch it until after Travis Outlaw scored. The basket was counted.

Needless to say, Celtics coach Doc Rivers was upset.

"We even called the league about it and they didn't know what to do," he said.

A still frustrated Rivers took a comment sheet from NBA Official Mike Callahan and dropped it into a reporters hand while Ray Allen was conducting an interview.

"Here's another brilliant quote," a visibly upset Rivers said before leaving the Celtics locker room.

Callahan said the following:

"If we would have caught the six men on the court before the made goal then there would have been no score. We would have called a technical foul on Portland and stopped play. After the technical foul shot (by Boston), Portland would have inbounded the ball as they were in possession before the stoppage."

Diogu Trying To Weather 'Tough Situation'

Dec 26, 2008 8:02 AM

Blazers' reserve Ike Diogu is playing behind several of the team's cornerstones but is trying his best to remain professional.

"It's a pretty tough situation to be in, especially when the people in front of you are kind of like the foundation of the future for the organization of the Blazers," Diogu said. "But, that's just a part of the business side of it.  I think you have to just remain a professional.  Everybody wants to play, but unfortunately, there's just not enough time for everybody to go around.  I still haven't lost confidence in my game, and I'm just waiting for my opportunity."

While Diogu is remaining professional, sources close to the situation insist either Diogu or Channing Frye could be had for the right price.

Pritchard: We're A League Of Mimics

Dec 24, 2008 7:01 PM

Kevin Pritchard was recently asked what the biggest change he has seen in the NBA over the past year.

"We?re a league of mimics. We see what?s working, and we try to mimic it. You see Boston with their great defense, and then everybody wants to be a great defensive team. I come from a background where defense is very important. Right now every team is trying to figure out how they can put the best defensive players out there. I think that?s important.

"It?s amazing because for us in the West, I don?t feel like it?s changed at all. You?re going to have to get in the high 40s to get in the playoffs. You can?t just win fifty percent of your games and expect to make it to the playoffs. Now the East, maybe you can, but not in the West. There are too many good teams. So in that instance, I don?t think anything has changed. You?ve got to be an upper-echelon team to get into the playoffs. And again, that?s our goal, so we know we?re going to have to get up there."

Pritchard was also asked about future free agent classes.

"What I don?t want to do is limit any of our thinking. Are we interested in definite players in 2010? Who knows? A lot has to be done between now and then. What I do know is that I really like our team. I like our youth. You project out some of our guys like Nicolas, Bayless, Sergio, Rudy, Oden. What are they going to be in two or three years? They?re just cutting their teeth right now. I believe we have a chance to be pretty good for a long time. And that?s what we wanted. We want to have a chance to have a crack at the big games, the big playoff games down the line in two, three, four, five years. An elongated success. Hopefully, we can do that."

Portland's Frye Is In 'Sucky Situation'

Dec 22, 2008 9:29 AM

Blazers forward Channing Frye his seen his playing time reduce, the rotation adjusted and a host of new teammates surpass him.

"I try not to dwell on it," Frye said. "I try not to bring any of my teammates down or anything about the situation. But it's like, you know, it's rough. It's one of those things where it's, I don't want to say impossible, but it's kind of tough to just go in there and try to be productive in those minutes. And you feel like your leash gets shorter and shorter."

Portland has been playing great basketball, thanks to strong play from Joel Przybilla, LaMarcus Aldridge and rookie Greg Oden in the paint.

"Everybody understands my situation with the team. And if L.A. wasn't playing great, or if Joel wasn't playing great, or Greg, I'd be in a totally different situation," Frye said. "It's a sucky situation, but I can't let this hurt my confidence."

Roy: My Confidence Level Is At All-Time High

Dec 20, 2008 5:18 PM

Portland guard Brandon Roy admitted recently that his confidence level is at all-time high after torching the Suns for 52 points on Thursday night.

The effort capped of the best five-game scoring stretch in the team's history.

"My confidence level is at an all-time high," Roy said. "Even when I made big shots (earlier in my career), my confidence wasn't as high as it is now. That's the biggest difference. It's the mentality between the old Brandon and the new Brandon. It's just more comfortable, more confident, and it's showing more in scoring and in that swagger and attitude."
