James Southerland Projects To Teams As Shooting Specialist

Jun 25, 2013 7:36 PM

James Southerland has worked out for 15 teams ahead of Thursday’s NBA draft, and the 6-foot-8 forward out of Syracuse has been assured he has a place in the league as a spot-up shooting specialist.

“He’s a great shooter with NBA size, and it’s clear he’ll be a specialist,” one executive said.

Southerland has shot impressively in workouts, but he knows he must work on his ability to create plays putting the ball on the floor, as well as his defense. The Sacramento Kings, owners of the No. 36 pick, have shown increasing interest in Southerland and several other teams have let him know he's under consideration, a source told RealGM.

Southerland, 23, averaged 13.3 points on 39.8 percent three-point shooting in his senior season at Syracuse, attempting over six per game.

D'Alessandro Compares Preparing For Kings' Interview To Being In Law School

Jun 18, 2013 10:49 AM

Pete D'Alessandro was introduced on Monday as general manager of the Sacramento Kings.

Vivek Ranadive put his GM candidates through an extensive interview process, involving analysis of the Kings' roster, plans for both the short and long-term, as well as examples of linear and non-linear thinking.

"I had just finished preparing for my first interview," D'Alessandro said later in the afternoon, "and I got this email from Vivek. I was thinking, 'Wow, I think I need to do a lot more.' I proofed everything on the flight over, and then when I landed, I went to a Kinko's in Palo Alto and made copies. I pulled an all-nighter. I felt like I was back in law school."

Chris Mullin has been offered a consultant role in the Sacramento Kings' front office.

Mullin was the top basketball executive for the Golden State Warriors from 2004-09, spending time with then-assistant GM Pete D'Alessandro.
