Cuban: Blair's Performance Against Spurs Will Be 'A Beautiful Thing'

Aug 21, 2013 11:16 PM

DeJuan Blair has circled the Dallas Mavericks' matchup against his old team, the San Antonio Spurs, next season, and Mark Cuban senses determination in his new forward.

“DeJuan already knows when we’re playing the Spurs,” Cuban said. “We already know what DeJuan is going to do to the Spurs. It’s going to be a beautiful thing.”

Blair was adamant recently that he believes the Spurs would have won the NBA championship last season had he played in the Finals against the Miami Heat.

The Mavericks expect Blair to provide a strong inside presence.

“DeJuan was a really important acquisition for us because Elton Brand didn’t return,” Rick Carlisle said. “We need that physical (butt)-kicker to put out there and be an enforcer for us.”

Ginobili Frequently Thought About Retirement At End Of Regular Season

Aug 21, 2013 1:08 PM

Manu Ginobili decided to postpone retirement and re-sign with the San Antonio Spurs this offseason.

"By the end of the season — and I mean the regular season and not the playoffs — I thought about it a lot," said Ginobili of retirement. "I was so tired of it. I hadn’t suffered a muscle strain in my whole life and I went through three in four months. I felt negative, fed up. And I thought about retiring. I hadn’t come close to making up my mind but I thought it was something I had to discuss with my wife, “what if …?” She told me that it was my decision and she was fine either way. But when I recovered physically I started to feel better about it all. When the season ended I grieved for 48, 72 hours and I didn’t feel retired. I knew something was missing, that I still wanted to play."

James Johnson Will Work Out For Spurs, Hawks, Jazz

Aug 21, 2013 11:48 AM

Free agent forward James Johnson will attend workouts for the San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz and is hoping to leave teams impressed, league sources told RealGM.

Ever since Johnson was drafted 16th in the 2009 NBA draft, teams have envisioned him as an athletic forward at 6-foot-9, but he’s yet to put together a breakout season in four years.

Johnson’s ability to perform in workout settings could have one team intrigued enough to give him an opportunity, though.

Johnson played a complete season with the Chicago Bulls in 2009-10, but he was traded to the Toronto Raptors the next year and averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in 2011-12. Johnson, 26, spent last season as mostly a reserve for the Sacramento Kings.

Roy Hibbert traveled to San Antonio to train with Tim Duncan on Monday.

Hibbert trained with Duncan last summer, too, and has spoken at length about his friendship with the San Antonio Spurs' big man.

Other big men were in attendance on Monday, when they worked out inside the Spurs' practice facility.

The Indiana Pacers went to the Eastern Conference finals last season and received a strong playoff performance from Hibbert.

Deshaun Thomas To Play In France

Aug 15, 2013 11:15 PM

Deshaun Thomas agreed to a contract to play for a team in Paris, France.

Thomas was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 58th overall pick in the June draft.

Thomas made the decision to play overseas, rather than shoot for the Spurs’ final roster spot, for financial reasons.

“In this business, you have to think about family (Thomas has a 17-month-old son),” he said. “I still could have gone to (training camp) and tried to make the roster, but with my son and a family to provide for, I had to look at that. And developing a year ain’t going to hurt.

“It was kind of tough, because I wanted to make the roster. But if training camp didn’t go well, I’d be in the (NBA Development) League, and that (pays) like a part-time job.”

Spurs' GM/Coaching Tree Expands To 11

Aug 13, 2013 6:00 PM

The San Antonio Spurs’ coaching and general manager tree during the tenure of Gregg Popovich and R.C. Buford has grown again this offseason with the hiring of Mike Budenholzer by the Atlanta Hawks and Brett Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers as head coaches.

Jacque Vaughn left the Spurs last season to become head coach of the Orlando Magic, while Mike Brown is back with the Cleveland Cavaliers and is also a former assistant of Popovich. Monty Williams also began his coaching career with the Spurs during the 04-05 season.

In terms of general manager positions, Danny Ferry (Hawks), Sam Presti (Oklahoma City Thunder), Dell Demps (New Orleans Pelicans), Kevin Pritchard (Indiana Pacers), Dennis Lindsey (Utah Jazz) and Rob Hennigan (Magic) all worked in the front office of the Spurs.

Chris Grant worked under Ferry with the Cavaliers before becoming his replacement, while Rich Cho was Presti’s assistant general manager with the Thunder before becoming GM of the Blazers and then now with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Michael Malone, now the head coach of the Sacramento Kings, worked for several seasons as an assistant to Brown with the Cavaliers.

Jack Cooley Rejects Partially Guaranteed NBA Deals For Turkish Team

Aug 11, 2013 12:34 PM

Before signing with Turkey’s Trabzonspor, Memphis Grizzlies summer league forward Jack Cooley turned down training camp invites – including multiple partially guaranteed deals – from 10 NBA teams, his agent Adam Pensack told RealGM.

Cooley had received camp deals and some partially guaranteed offers out of the Portland Trail Blazers, Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers, Pensack said. Even so, the Turkish club gave Cooley an offer too lucrative to reject.

“He will play a lot against top level competition and will come back next year even more ready for the NBA,” Pensack said.

Cooley, a 22-year-old forward at 6-foot-9, averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds over six games with the Grlzzlies in the Las Vegas summer league. He averaged 13.1 points and 10.1 rebounds in his senior season at Notre Dame, going undrafted in the June NBA draft.

Cooley is expected to pursue a deal in the NBA next offseason.

Cory Joseph Talks NBA Finals, Canada Basketball

Aug 2, 2013 6:43 PM

Cory Joseph is in Toronto for the next two weeks attending the Team Canada Senior Men’s Basketball training camp as the team is set to play at the end of the month in the qualifiers for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Joseph was asked what he learned in his first NBA Finals experience.

“It was good, a great experience," said Joseph. "Obviously every possession counts. Look at what happened in Game 6.

“We were upset. We let one slip away from our hands. We were right there in Game 6, a couple plays away [from the championship]. It is what it is, the ball falls that way sometimes. We played good, just a couple plays didn’t go our way.”

On the subject of San Antonio Spurs' teammate, Tim Duncan, and the missed bunny over Shane Battier in the final minute of Game 7, Joseph said, “Yeah, he thinks about it. He’s got a lot of other things to worry about right now of course.

“He has a lot going on in his life right now. I hope everything is well for him.”

The former University of Texas point guard is not the only Joseph family member competing for a spot on the roster to represent Canada. His cousin, Kris Joseph, who ended his rookie season with the Brooklyn Nets and his brother, Devoe Joseph, for Khimik in Ukraine last season have also been invited to camp and are fighting for their own spots.

“To have blood here with me, it’s great, it’s amazing”, said Joseph. “When you have three Josephs on one roster, it’s amazing. I was looking at the water bottles today and I was saying they need to put our first names. Looking at the bottles from an angle, all I could see was “Joseph Joseph Joseph!” I couldn’t see the “C” on the other side. They need to put our first names instead of our last names on our jerseys”, he said with a laugh.
