Marc Gasol: Spurs Are An Example Franchise

May 28, 2015 10:54 AM

Marc Gasol is expected to be pursued in free agency by the San Antonio Spurs.

Gasol's free agency plans have remained a mystery and the common expectation has been he would re-sign with the Memphis Grizzlies.

"I'm a free agent, but I still have not raised anything," said Gasol of his future. "In the next few weeks, I will begin to speak with different franchises. My brother has not advised me about the different possibilities, but the decision will be complicated. My family spends time in Memphis and has even worked in the Saint Jude Hospital."

"San Antonio is an example franchise and I've always admired Tim Duncan," said Gasol. "But we'll see in the summer. "

The Spurs can create maximum contract cap space.

Marc Gasol Expected To Receive Free Agency Pitch From Spurs, Lakers, Knicks, Mavs

May 19, 2015 1:42 PM

The San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks all are developing proposals to present to Marc Gasol on July 1, according sources.

Gasol averaged 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.6 blocks while shooting 49.4 percent from the field in 81 games this season.

"He's the best player at his position in the league," Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said. "You make preparations if it goes in a direction you're not happy about. You're not going to lose sleep at night. It's not going to do any good. He's going to do what he's going to do. Not in the next two weeks are we going to send him a big thing of flowers and it's going to change his mind. [By then], the cement is dry.

"We'll make our last, 'Hey, this is what's important to us. What's important to you?' Things of that nature. But I've got to think his mind is 99 percent made up."

Spurs Expected To Prioritize LaMarcus Aldridge Over Marc Gasol

May 18, 2015 5:13 PM

While the San Antonio Spurs will certainly pursue Marc Gasol, they're expected to initially focus on LaMarcus Aldridge.

The plans of Marc Gasol remain a mystery to even those closest to him, while there's been several indications that Aldridge will at least strongly consider leaving the Portland Trail Blazers.

Gasol and Aldridge have each spent their entire career with the Grizzlies and Blazers respectively.

Antonio Daniels Believes Tim Duncan Will Return For 19th Season

May 8, 2015 12:14 PM

Tim Duncan is believed to be leaning toward a return for his 19th season with the San Antonio Spurs, according to one person familiar with him.

“I would be very surprised if he retired,” said Antonio Daniels, Duncan’s friend and former teammate with the Spurs. “As long as he’s staying at a level where he feels like he’s relevant and competing, I can’t see it.”

Duncan averaged 13.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and nearly two blocks this season. He had 27 points and 11 rebounds in the Spurs' loss in Game 7 in the first round.

“I continue to be amazed by Tim Duncan,” Gregg Popovich said. “He was our most consistent player in the playoffs, at 39. He needed a little more help, and I feel badly he didn’t get it. It wasn’t for a lack of trying.

“To watch him is pretty spectacular, in itself.”

Manu Ginobili Will Be Patient In Making Decision On 15-16

May 6, 2015 12:36 PM

Manu Ginobili will wait at least a month to make his decision on whether to continue his playing career.

“I know many are awaiting what will happen with my career. The truth is that I am grateful for all the words of appreciation and affection. While I am not someone who usually reads them, I saw nice comments that make you feel good. They can tell you to play one more year, you’re still good … but it’s beyond that. It’s how you feel or how much it costs to get ready to go to each of the cities or play five games in a week. Or play 85 games in 165 days. So it’s a time of uncertainty.

“I’ll wait for this month and see how I feel. If I feel like a former player or not. I begin to wonder if or how my body will feel. It is a unique moment, I’ve never been in this situation. I thought about retiring briefly in 2013, but after a week or 10 days I knew I wanted to take another challenge. Now let’s see. Maybe now is the same or more difficult for me and I have to wait longer. So I’ll see calmly what I want do, because there are decisions you can’t rush.

“Today I do not feel that there is a right decision, whatever it may be. You never know if it’s good or not. Because it is a unique situation, because no one can tell you what to do. Because yes, there are a lot of former players who went through this time and so on, but each has its experience with different family moments, with particular physical realities. To stop doing what you did 100% of your adult life is a unique moment, which gives a lot of uncertainty. At times I think it’s time and others not. I have many more questions, so I want to give a time.”

Ginobili said his decision could be made in part on what happens with Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan.

“The truth is that if the franchise had said they did not want me or it was time to rebuild and wanted a younger team, I would have greatly facilitated the task. If there is another coach, Tim retires, Tony (Parker) does not play anymore, that would change the situation. I understand it’s time to retool, and understandably so. But if Pop continues and Tim can follow, everything is different. I guess we’ll have a little talk with Tim, who seems to be on the same ledge as me.We’ll see where the wind blows.”

Ettore Messina Interested In NBA Head Coaching Opportunities

May 6, 2015 12:25 PM

Ettore Messina told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he is interested in becoming a head coach in the NBA.

Messina is currently an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs after a lengthy career as a head coach in Europe.

“I am seriously thinking about that but I’d ask first (Gregg Popovich) and (RC) Buford for advice," said Messina. "At the same time I am very happy with the Spurs. I have two years left on my contract with the Spurs. Maybe I finish my contract and I will go back home peacefully” said Messina who had some interviews with the Hawks before they hired Mike Budenholzer. “I made all the interviews with their GM Danny Ferry who showed a big interest in me. Then they rightly hired Mike Budenholzer who comes from Spurs’ school."

Spurs Expect To Make Considerable Roster Changes In Offseason

May 4, 2015 11:58 PM

Gregg Popovich expects the San Antonio Spurs to have a different look next season, as the team will have free agents in Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Danny Green and others.

"We’ve got a pretty good number of free agents," Popovich said, "so with R.C. [Buford] and the coaches and the group we’ve talked about what we want to do going forward with the makeup of the team but the team will probably look considerably different than it looks this year because we have so many free agents and we want to re-tool a little bit.

“We want to try to start — not exactly over again — but these last four seasons have been a grind and we put the team together with that in mind, that this year we’d have all the free agents so we can decide what we want to do moving forward, as far as the makeup of the team. So we’ll spend a lot of time on that but as far as if guys are retiring or not we haven’t touched that.”

Duncan and Ginobili have said they are undecided on their playing futures.

Danny Green Hopes To Return To Spurs With Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili

May 4, 2015 2:40 PM

Danny Green will become a free agent in July along with Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, but he hopes to return to the San Antonio Spurs.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet, but this is a special group,” Green said. “That’s why it sucks so bad, especially for Timmy (Duncan) and Manu (Ginobili). We had an opportunity to do something special for them. All I can do is hope and pray for another group like that in the future, but I have a feeling some of those guys will be back. R.C. and Pop do a great job of bringing in new guys.”

Green scored 16 points in the Spurs' season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 7.

“Hopefully, I’ll be back,” he said. “I love San Antonio. The fans have always supported us, from day one. It sucks that we had such a special group, and things may be changing and not be the same again.”

Spurs Will Have $23M In Cap Space

May 4, 2015 12:57 PM

The San Antonio Spurs will have approximately $23 million in cap space this summer.

The Spurs have Tony Parker, Tiago Splitter, Boris Diaw, Patty Mills and Kyle Anderson on the books for a total of about $34.2 million for 2015-16, plus Kawhi Leonard will have a cap hold of $7.2 million until he signs his new contract.

By waiting until this offseason to sign Leonard to a long-term contract, the Spurs have significantly more cap space.

But the level of flexibility the Spurs will have to use that cap space will be determined in large part to what happens with Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

The Spurs also have the free agency of Danny Green to consider.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Marc Gasol are the Spurs' two probable targets in free agency.
