Sep 27, 2006 2:33 PM

Sam Mitchell is entering the final year of his three-year deal  as head coach of the Toronto Raptors, but he and general manager Bryan Colangelo are attempting to not make it a big issue.

"We're not even going to talk about it," said Mitchell. "To me, it's a distraction. I've always got what I deserve ... for 18 years that's happened and I'm not thinking anything will change."

Colangelo To Seek Embry's Advice On Every Deal

Sep 26, 2006 9:03 AM

Bryan Colangelo said that Wayne Embry made the GM job of the Raptors so attractive to him.

"Two things made the job attractive to me," Colangelo said. "First, just the presence of Wayne. I basically made it somewhat of a prerequisite of my taking the job that Wayne be allowed to stay on in some capacity. That was one of the conditions I thought was important.

"Secondly, the mere notion that Wayne, to some degree, had cleared the deck and had put the franchise in a much more favourable position as far as cap room flexibility was concerned made it even more attractive."

Colangelo said Embry will be an influential component of his inner circle for the coming season.

"I will not pull the trigger on a deal without bouncing something, or an idea or a concept, off of Wayne," he said.

Trybanski To Join Raptors For Training Camp

Sep 22, 2006 7:24 PM

Cezary Trybanski will sign with the Toronto Raptors next week and report to their training camp on October 3rd in Waterloo, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Trybanski, a 7-2 center from Poland, was originally signed by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002 and has made stops in Phoenix and New York.

He was included in the Jamal Crawford trade of 2004, but never played a game with Chicago, as the club waived him just prior to the start of the 2004-2005 season.

Trybanski was a member of the Tulsa 66ers of the NBDL last year.

Toronto Has High Hopes For Spanish Connection

Sep 14, 2006 4:57 AM

Spanish duo Jose Calderon and Jorge Garbajosa, now Raptors teammates, are already in Toronto, part of a large contingent of Raptors in town to get ready for what should be an interesting NBA season, the Globe And Mail is reporting.

If Garbajosa can perform at anything close to the level he did for Spain this summer -- particularly in the medal round -- the encouragement Calderon provided to his friend to make the jump from Europe might turn out to be the second-year point guard's most important assist yet.

"For me, having him [Calderon] here as a friend and a teammate, everything is going to be easier for me," said Garbajosa, who signed a three-year, $12-million (U.S.) contract this summer.

The Raptors are likely hoping that the presence of Garbajosa, who described Calderon as his basketball soulmate this summer, will help Calderon maximize his game.

While Calderon showed glimpses of superior playmaking ability in the first half of the season and finished eighth in the league in assists over 48 minutes, with 9.3, his perimeter-shooting problems (he made only seven of 43 three-pointers) allowed defences to sag off him and limited his effectiveness. An ankle injury and foot problems also hampered him, and eventually his confidence sagged.

"I didn't play the way I expected to play," Calderon said. "I started the season well, but after the injuries, for some reason I didn't play great. But I worked hard this summer, I played with confidence and I will try to bring that confidence here."
