Colangelo Expects D'Antoni To Get Another Coaching Job Soon

Mar 21, 2012 11:14 AM

Bryan Colangelo believes Mike D'Antoni will be hired for another NBA job "very soon."

Colangelo sees D'Antoni's coaching style and philosophy as being one that can lead again to big success as he experienced with the Suns.

“Mike’s system can work, but you have to have the right personnel and the right mindset to do it,” Colangelo said. “Now, that’s not an indictment of anybody. I think it was evident that it was working (with the Knicks) a few weeks earlier. But again, there’s been a revolving door of players for the last few years so it’s been hard.

“I don’t know all the ins and outs of what happened here. There was a revolving door but there was a plan. And the plan was to take a few steps back to move forward. And the moving forward was an infusion of some big-time talent. Again, does the system work? You can debate that maybe it didn’t here.”

Valanciunas, High 2012 Pick, Cap Space Gives Raptors Optimism

Mar 16, 2012 12:26 PM

The Raptors continued to stay the course of preserving cap space and in building for the long-term by not making a trade that compromises that direction.

"Based on our current record, we are going to stand in a position to add another quality talent, possibily a top-five talent," said Colangelo.

"With the addition of (Jonas) Valanciunas, the addition of a new player we might select (in the draft), the flexibility that could net another player (in free agency) we feel very good about where we stand."

Colangelo: Barbosa Trade Creates Flexibility, Further Evaluation Of Bayless And Forbes

Mar 16, 2012 12:15 PM

Bryan Colangelo spoke to the media about the activity of the Raptors on trade deadline day, which included trading Leandro Barbosa and remaining committed to preserving their cap space.

"We concluded we would only do it if it made sense for both sides," said Colangelo of consulting with Barbosa.

Colangelo said the trade "allows the team to open up a tremndous amount of flexibility" during the beginning of the pre-draft stage of the calendar.

Colangelo also said it allows the team to fully evaluate their personnel, specifically Jerryd Bayless and Gary Forbes.

Raptors Encouraged By Rubio In Looking At Development Of Valanciunas

Mar 13, 2012 1:44 PM

In selecting Jonas Valanciunas, the Raptors took the long-view in a way that mirrors what the Wolves did with Ricky Rubio.

With Rubio a Rookie of the Year candidate before going down for the season with a torn ACL, the Raptors are encouraged by the comparison.

"I don't like to make comparisons like that," Bryan Colangelo said. "Clearly the situation is one that you've drafted a young player, he's playing professional basketball somewhere else, it's not at the NBA level but he is continuing the process of growing and maturing as an individual and as a basketball player.

"He's playing minutes. I think all of that was favorable in Ricky's situation. Ricky probably got to the point where it was counter-productive because that last year in Spain he was really, if anything, going the opposite direction. It's almost like there was a disinterest, if you will, or he had a lot less impact. I'm sure that extra time in Europe was beneficial for him, but in his case, maybe it lasted just one season too long."
