Colangelo Preaches Patience With Bargnani

Feb 23, 2013 11:58 AM

Bryan Colangelo has not given up on Andrea Bargnani, who missed 26 games this season with a torn elbow ligament.

“Andrea has obviously been criticized for his play after coming back. I would probably label it, myself, as 50 percent good and 50 percent not so good,” Colangelo said. “He’s had a couple of games where coach has stayed with him down the stretch, and we’ve won those games. I think he was very engaged in a few of the contests.”

Bargnani is adjusting to new teammates and a new role -- coming off the bench.

“You have to understand also that if you look at the team that (Bargnani’s) coming back to, if he appears to be a little bit out of sorts, maybe not fully comfortable, in reality, it’s a different team,” Colangelo said. “It’s an entirely different team. If Andrea was the first option at the beginning of the season, he’s now been relegated to the third or fourth option. A couple things have happened: We acquired Rudy Gay; DeMar DeRozan has also elevated his play, and much to a number of critics’ question marks, (has shown) an ability to play alongside of Rudy Gay and thrive.

“This is a new team, a new environment. He’s being asked to come off of the bench right now as opposed to start. You add all of that up, it’s going to take a while to get acclimated to the new surroundings.”

Colangelo addressed his attempt to move Bargnani at the trade deadline.

“Unfortunately, Andrea got hurt,” Colangelo said. “Once the injury occurred, his return, as late as it was in the process, as near to the trade deadline (as it was), probably did not leave enough runway with respect to a deal being made now.”

Colangelo Hopes To Be Retained By Raptors, No Talks Currently

Feb 19, 2013 3:55 PM

The Toronto Raptors hold a team option on the contract of Bryan Colangelo for the 13-14 NBA season.

The Raptors recently underwent an ownership change and Colangelo said that no discussion about his own future has been discussed.

"This is somewhat of a getting-to-know-you scenario for everyone involved, myself included," said Colangelo. And I would like to think that at the end of the day, they look at my track record and my history and say that I'm the right guy. Time will tell. I have been consistent about one thing: I will always do what's right for the organization. It has nothing to do with me. If there's an opportunity to improve this team, I will do so. There's obviously always a balance in my position between short-term results and long-term results, or short-term outlook and long-term outlook.

"I've proven that, despite all the things that have been happening with the rebuilding of this team simultaneous to the uncertainty with my contract, I always made the right long-term strategic decision with respect to the transactions that were being made or draft picks that were being made."

Colangelo: Bargnani Talks Remain Fluid, Could Stay Given How Role Has Changed

Feb 19, 2013 3:47 PM

The Toronto Raptors continue to explore trade scenarios involving Andrea Bargnani, but are also prepared to keep him.

Bargnani's role with the Raptors has changed given their acquisition of Rudy Gay and the emergence of DeMar DeRozan.

"All of a sudden the outlook and the presence of a guy like Andrea is entirely different now," said Bryan Colangelo. "He's not relied on as a No. 1 guy. He has never been paid like a No. 1 option, but people wanted to criticize that he couldn't handle that role. I've always felt like he's been slotted in salary-wise as a No. 2 or No. 3. Maybe he's kind of fitting in nicely now.

"If a trade doesn't occur before the deadline, or even this summer, maybe it's because we figured out that with the evolution of the team he is the right guy to be a part of this team. He's been through the hard part. This may be the easiest part ahead of him.

"I would say (the situation) is fluid. There may have been an outright cry (to trade him) externally, whether from the media or the bloggers, to make a deal. But internally, we've always said that we recognized that a change of scenery may be helpful for him and maybe beneficial for us. But we always recognized the talent, and I believe that – in some of the trade discussions I've had – the market recognizes the talent. And we didn't want to do something just to do it."

Bobcats Interested In Bargnani For Gordon

Feb 16, 2013 3:41 PM

The Charlotte Bobcats are motivated to trade Ben Gordon, which creates another possible destination for the Toronto Raptors to send Andrea Bargnani.

The Raptors have actively been seeking a trade of Bargnani for several weeks.

The Raptors, however, are unlikely to trade Bargnani for Gordon given the presence of Terrence Ross and Alan Anderson at shooting guard.

Gordon is on a shorter contract than Carlos Boozer, another player linked to a Bargnani trade.

Sources: Raptors Can Accept Bargnani-Boozer Deal Whenever They Choose

Feb 15, 2013 11:46 AM

The Toronto Raptors were told last week that they can accept the Andrea Bargnani and John Lucas III trade for Carlos Boozer and Nate Robinson from the Chicago Bulls whenever they wanted it, according to league sources.

That deal could take the Bulls below the luxury-tax threshold.

The Bulls would like to avoid paying tax, especially if Derrick Rose is not able to play this season.
