Sources: Raptors To Host 2016 NBA All-Star Game

Sep 24, 2013 3:19 PM

The Raptors are on the verge of landing the 2016 NBA All-Star game in Toronto, according to multiple sources.

An official announcement is expected shortly that will reveal further details of how one of the sport's biggest weekends will tie in to the Toronto Raptors' 20th-anniversary season.

Tim Leiweke, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president and CEO, made it clear upon taking over the company that landing the prestigious event was one of his early goals.

“Clearly the 2016 all-star game is a flag in the sand that we planted with the NBA. It is a must have in my opinion and it will be the centre piece of how we rebrand this,” Leiweke said in May.

Tracy McGrady Regrets Leaving Raptors In Free Agency

Sep 14, 2013 3:04 PM

Tracy McGrady left the Toronto Raptors in free agency of 2000, signing a deal with the Orlando Magic. Now retired, McGrady looks back with regret about leaving a Raptors team that had another emerging star in Vince Carter at the time.

“In hindsight, looking back, obviously I wish I had stayed in Toronto,” McGrady said. “There’s no doubt we could have contended for a championship. I think about that often. But if ‘if’ was a fifth, you know?”

People close to McGrady also were pushing him to sign with the Chicago Bulls that year, believing the market could enhance his brand, but the forward did not want to join the organization.

“They were going to get a percentage off of (my endorsement income),” McGrady said of his advisors, among them Alvis Smith, a shoe-company talent procurer who was credited with “discovering” McGrady as a high schooler. “They were pushing me to go to Chicago and I didn’t want to go to Chicago.”

NBA Takes Teams Off Sales Market In Preperation For New TV Deal

Sep 10, 2013 5:51 PM

The NBA currently has no teams for sale and there are no plans to put any organizations on the market with a new lucrative television deal looming.

Several teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, have been pulled off the market recently. The Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors had also been previously rumored to be available.

"As we look at the coming domestic television deal and a great playoffs and Finals, there's a great buzz around the league right now," Adam Silver said Tuesday at the Bloomberg Sports Business Summit. "There aren't any teams for sale but if there were [the price] would be robust."

This is a significant departure from the last three-plus years when teams were selling both cheaply and quickly as nine different teams sold, many at reduced values.

Silver said Tuesday that for the first time there will be a committee of owners formed to oversee the TV contract talks.

It is believed that this new era of the league will give the owners more input with the commissioner.

"There's probably calls for more owner involvement than we've had historically," Silver said. "There's a new generation of owners who've become involved in the league. There's more a sense of activist owners ... these days led by Mark Cuban and others there are more full-time owners. It's a recognition that even for very wealthy people, it's a much larger percentage of their portfolio."

The Toronto Raptors’ roster stands at 14 after the team waived Quentin Richardson.

Richardson was acquired by the Raptors in the sign-and-trade that sent Andrea Bargnani to the Knicks.

The Raptors are unlikely to invite free agents to training camp to compete for the team’s 15th and final roster spot.
