Cavaliers Might Have Picked Jonas Valanciunas If They Knew When He'd Join NBA

May 30, 2017 10:17 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers somewhat surprisingly selected Tristan Thompson with the fourth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

The Cavaliers were also considered Enes Kanter and Jonas Valanciunas.

Sources say the Cavaliers might have selected Valanciunas had he provided a specific time of when he would leave Europe for the NBA.

Valanciunas ultimately joined the Toronto Raptors just one season after he was drafted.

Raptors Acquire 2018 2nd Round Pick From Magic For Jeff Weltman

May 25, 2017 2:16 PM

The Toronto Raptors will acquire a second round pick in 2018 from the Orlando Magic as compensation for Jeff Weltman.

Weltman was hired by the Magic this week as president of basketball operations.

Orlando will send the Raptors the least favorable of two second round picks they control in 2018. The Magic have their own second round pick in 2018 along with the second round pick of the Los Angeles Lakers as part of the Dwight Howard trade.

The salaries of general managers are on the rise with contending teams.

Phil Jackson, Pat Riley and Danny Ainge also receive substantial salaries beyond the amounts being paid to Myers and Ujiri.

Masai Ujiri: Raptors Need A Culture Reset

May 9, 2017 1:12 PM

The Toronto Raptors will readdress the state of their team following their four-game sweep by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"After that performance [against the Cavaliers], we need a culture reset here," Masai Ujiri said at an end-of-season news conference Tuesday.

"We've tried what we've done so many times and it hasn't worked," he said. "We have to go a different direction, do something different. I don't know now what it is."

While Ujiri said changing all of the players isn't the answer, he feels they need to move the ball more on offense.

Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, PJ Tucker and Patrick Patterson will be free agents.

Ujiri said it's "not realistic" that the Raptors will be able to bring back all of their free agents.

Toronto does want to re-sign Lowry.

"We know what we have with him, with him at his best," Ujiri said. "The last couple months we saw without him, we didn't jell."

Ujiri said he's willing to do whatever it takes to improve the team.

"We're trying to be progressive thinkers here," he said. "This business is all about risk-taking, too. You have to put yourself on the line there. Honestly, I'm not afraid of that."

Kyle Lowry Confirms He'll Opt Out, Expects Stressful Decision

May 8, 2017 2:45 PM

Kyle Lowry has confirmed he will opt out of the final season of his contract with the Toronto Raptors.

“I will be opting out and that’s as far as I’ve gotten,” Lowry said. “Honestly, that is as far as I’ve gotten. We lost yesterday. I still have to get my ankle healthy, get treatment, get to that point.”

Lowry missed the final two games of the season with a sprained left ankle.

Lowry expects the decision to be difficult. Lowry re-signed with the Raptors in 2014.

“It’s something I have been through before — this will be my third time — so it’s fun but it’s a little stressful too because you are making a decision on your family . . . a new franchise, an old franchise, it’s always something that you are changing and it is a stressful decision.”

Lowry will prioritize his chances of competing for a title.

“A ring. Nothing else. I just want a ring,” he said.

Lowry was asked if he believes he can do that with the Raptors.

“I think I can do that anywhere I play,” he said. “That’s just how confident I am.”

Masai Ujiri: We're Trying To Keep Up With The Big Boys

May 8, 2017 2:31 PM

The Toronto Raptors will have another key offseason in 2017 with Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Patrick Patterson and PJ Tucker becoming free agents.

Last offseason, the Raptors re-signed DeMar DeRozan to a five-year contract worth nearly the max.

"The summer is huge," Masai Ujiri said on Sunday to ESPN after the Raptors were eliminated. "But every summer is huge. We are trying to keep up with the big boys."

After taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to six games in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016, they were swept by them in the second round.

Beyond the questions of re-signing those free agents, the Raptors could like to trade some combination of Jonas Valanciunas, Cory Joseph and DeMarre Carroll.

The Raptors' decisions will likely pivot on what Lowry decides to do.

DeRozan wants Lowry back, but won't lobby him, he told ESPN on Sunday. "I didn't call or pressure him the first time, and he didn't do that to me," DeRozan said. "I'm just gonna be there for him as a friend."

DeMar DeRozan: Raptors Would Have Won Series If We Had LeBron Too

May 8, 2017 3:33 AM

DeMar DeRozan identified LeBron James as the difference between the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers.

"If we had LeBron on our team, too, we would have won," DeRozan said. "We could say that all day and all the time, but we didn't. It happened. We got swept. It's going to be one of those long summers for us."

James has represented the Eastern Conference in the Finals in every season since 2011.

"They're a well-oiled machine, playing on all cylinders right now," Dwane Casey said of the Cavs. "What did James shoot, 48 percent from 3 the whole series? When he's hitting the shot like that, they're very difficult to beat. You've got to match tit for tat to beat them."

Raptors' Four-Game Exit Could Increase Odds Of Kyle Lowry Departure

May 8, 2017 2:29 AM

Kyle Lowry will be a free agent this offseason and the Toronto Raptors' four-game elimination in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers could increase his odds of leaving.

According to Marc Stein, there were "late-season rumbles that Kyle Lowry will give legit thought to a free-agent switch to the West."

The Raptors can offer Lowry a fifth guaranteed season on his contract while rival teams can offer four.

Lowry re-signed with the Raptors in free agency in 2014.

Kyle Lowry Doubtful For Game 4

May 6, 2017 2:43 PM

Kyle Lowry is doubtful for Game 4 with an ankle sprain as the Toronto Raptors are facing elimination by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Lowry also didn't play in Game 3.

"I'm probably doubtful, honestly," Lowry said. "I don't think I'll be able to play. ... It's not looking great, but I'm not giving up on it."

Lowry was getting more treatment Saturday, adding that he's not "giving up hope" of being ready to attempt playing in Game 4.

Lowry will be a free agent this offseason.
