Hayward Sets Goal Of Making All-Star Team

Sep 22, 2012 9:00 PM

Gordon Hayward is set to begin his critical third season in the NBA.

"I think I've shown that I belong in the league. It's something that you work for and you work towards," Hayward said. "Now I think I know that I belong and everything. Now you push yourself even further, try and become an All-Star. That's definitely a goal of mine, but I think first and foremost I think if we were to win games that will help that out."

Hayward has added five pounds of muscle in the offseason.

"I think as a player you kind of want to improve both as a team and individually from year to year," Hayward added. "I've done that from my rookie to sophomore year. Hopefully I'll do that again this year. Same goes for the team. We missed playoffs first year (39-43 in 2010-11), made it barely the second year, so this year needs to be better than that."

Raja Bell Continuing To Work On Buyout With Jazz

Sep 11, 2012 5:39 PM

Raja Bell has yet to give the Utah Jazz a decision on a contract buyout as the two sides continue to work toward reaching an agreement, his agent told RealGM on Tuesday.

“We’re talking to their new GM [Dennis Lindsey] and working on it,” agent Herb Rudoy said by phone.

Contrary to multiple reports last month that Bell had been refusing the buyout proposal from the Jazz, Rudoy confirmed that "he hasn’t rejected or accepted anything.”

Bell signed a three-year deal with the Jazz in 2010, but has made known his displeasure and desire to part ways since the middle of the 10-11 season.

Regarded as a quality outside shooter and a gritty defender, Bell, 35, has averaged almost 10 points on 40.6 percent from three-point range over his 12-year career with six different teams. Bell averaged 6.4 points last season, playing in 34 of 66 games.

Jazz Promote Michael Sanders, Hire Brad Jones

Sep 6, 2012 8:39 PM

Michael Sanders has been promoted to an assistant coach on Tyrone Corbin’s staff, after having spent the 2011-12 season as assistant coach/player development with the Utah Jazz.

In a related move, the Jazz has also agreed in principle with veteran NBA Development League coach, and former Jazz scout, Brad Jones to assume Sanders’ previous position as assistant coach/player development.

“Moving Mike from player development to the bench is a promotion that he has earned. His strong work ethic and skillset, coupled with his experience as a former player and coach in the NBA and D-League, has proven to be valuable to our franchise and I look forward to working with him closer in his enhanced role,” said Utah Jazz Head Coach Tyrone Corbin. “Brad is a well-respected and recognized young coaching talent with a proven track-record of player development. We are very happy to be bringing him back to the Jazz family.”

A veteran of the coaching ranks, Sanders recently completed his first season with the Jazz and has previously served as an assistant coach in the NBA for Detroit, Milwaukee and Charlotte.

Jazz Liked Dennis Lindsey's Track Record Of Evaluating Players

Sep 2, 2012 10:35 AM

Dennis Lindsey has a history of finding gems outside the draft lottery, notably DeJuan Blair (drafted 36th in 2009), Tiago Splitter (28th in 2007) and Danny Green (signed from the D-League in 2010).

Lindsey, hired by the Jazz last month, was an assistant general manager in San Antonio.

"Those are things you notice and you go 'ooooh,' " said Jazz executive vice president Kevin O'Connor. "Will those guys be all-stars? Probably not. But they're good players on a terrific team and they were undervalued; they should've been picked higher. That is a guy who is a proven talent evaluator."

Lindsey got his start in the NBA in 1996 when he was hired by the Rockets. He spent eleven years with the Rockets, working his way up from video coordinator to director of player personnel to vice president of basketball operations and player personnel in 2002.

"He was already handling those duties long before he got the official titles," said Carol Dawson, the former Rockets general manager. "I just trusted him. He was one of the first guys to start using the computer (for evaluating players). He was doing that 'Moneyball' stuff — looking at tendencies. He knew how often a guy went to the baseline and where on the floor his scores came from."
