Rudy Gobert Out Two More Weeks With Knee Injury

Dec 31, 2017 10:46 AM

Rudy Gobert was re-evaluated on Saturday and is expected to miss two more weeks.

Gobert is showing progress towards his return as he's participating in light workouts and individual drills in practice.

Gobert suffered a left PCL sprain and bone bruise on Dec. 15.

A right tibia contusion also sidelined Gobert for 11 games earlier in the season.

“Rudy’s working and trying to get back, there’s nothing that his teammates or myself can do to accelerate that,” said Quin Snyder. “We see him every day. He’s been great about staying connected to the team, but having an advent calendar isn’t the answer.

“It’s going to be when it is and we’ll be glad to have him back when we do, but I don’t think there’s a sense that ‘Oh, if we had Rudy then we may have’… that’s not the right way to approach it.”

Chris Paul, Paul George Helped Convince Donovan Mitchell To Stay In Draft

Dec 28, 2017 10:16 AM

Chris Paul and Paul George helped convince Donovan Mitchell to stay in the 2017 draft.

Mitchell paid all of his expenses when he traveled to Thousand Oaks last spring to participate in the Creative Artists Agency pre-draft camp because he wanted to maintain his eligibility at Louisville.

"When I left school, my room was still clean, full of stuff," Mitchell said. "I never packed. I was coming back for a third year. In my head, 100 percent, coming back."

Paul and George worked out with Mitchell at the camp and helped convince him he was already good enough for the NBA.

"He's really good," George told reporters recently, calling Mitchell the steal of the draft. "He's a tough, fearless kid. We all saw that working out with him this past summer. I knew he was going to blossom."

Paul and Mitchell still talk several times a week.

"He can really, really play," Paul said. "I'm not surprised by it at all. He can play. He's strong, and he loves the game -- both ends, whether it's offense or defense. I don't know if it's because he's in Utah, everybody's surprised by it. I'm not."

Gordon Hayward Has No Regrets Leaving Jazz

Dec 16, 2017 10:05 AM

Gordon Hayward spoke to the media briefly before Friday's game between the Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz.

“No, I don’t regret anything,” Hayward said. “I unfortunately got injured, but happy to be here in Boston and happy to be a part of this team.”

Hayward reflected back on his free agency, which involved the leaking of his decision on the morning of July 4th that he attempted to walk back before his announcement that afternoon at The Players Tribune.

“It was a whirlwind experience,” Hayward said. “I don’t know if I could do it any faster than what I did. I went across the country three times, paying for my own private flight to get there as fast as I could.”

Hayward had dinner on Thursday night in Boston with Joe Ingles and Utah assistant Johnnie Bryant.

Rudy Gobert Suffers Grade 1 MCL Sprain

Dec 16, 2017 10:00 AM

Rudy Gobert suffered a Grade 1 MCL sprain in his left knee during Friday's game.

While x-rays on Gobert's knee were negative, he will undergo an MRI to confirm the initial diagnosis.

"This group's got character and they are going to compete no matter what the circumstances, and they did,'' Quin Snyder said.

Gobert went to the floor awkwardly after appearing to get rolled into by Derrick Favors.

Gobert fell back to the floor when after trying to get up and rolled to his back before clutching his left knee.

Gobert previously missed 11 games with a bone bruise in his right knee.

Rudy Gobert Could Return From Knee Injury Monday

Dec 3, 2017 6:34 PM

Rudy Gobert could return to the Utah Jazz lineup for Monday's game against the Wizards.

“Well, I defer to our medical group on that,” said Quin Snyder. “We’re going to confer and trust those guys to not do anything to put Rudy in harm’s way and when he’s ready to go he’ll be ready to go.”

Gobert has missed Utah's past 11 games with a bone bruise in his right knee.

Gobert was initially expected to miss at least four weeks but it has been just over three weeks since his injury.

Derrick Favors has played well at center with Gobert out.

Donovan Mitchell Becomes NBA's First 40-Point Rookie Since 2011

Dec 2, 2017 2:54 PM

Donovan Mitchell scored 41 points with 29 in the second half and 17 in the fourth quarter in Utah's 114-108 comeback win over the Pelicans on Friday.

Mitchell became the first rookie to score 40 or more points in a game since Blake Griffin in 2011.

Mitchell was 13-for-25 from the field.

“I’m speechless,” Mitchell said. “I’m pretty sure I was smiling for the last six points and I was grateful to have the fan support out there. It reminds me of Louisville. I’m just trying to make the right reads, make the right pass. I just want to make the right plays out there.”

“That man, he’s a monster,” Ekpe Udoh said. “He’s making his time now, and everyone better take note.”

Derrick Favors: Don't Write Me Off Just Yet

Dec 1, 2017 5:42 PM

Derrick Favors has averaged 16.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 blocks per game since Rudy Gobert's injury. Favors is in a contract year and ready to prove he's back from his injury issues.

“It was frustrating at first the past year or so dealing with the up-and-down role and minutes, but I’ve stayed confident,” Favors told The Vertical. “I’ve put the time in and that has helped me stay motivated with myself. At the end of the day, I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity and hold it down while Rudy was out. I’m taking advantage of the opportunity and showing everyone that I’m healthy. I want to prove to everyone that I’m the same guy. I’m 100 percent. I’ve been feeling healthy all summer and into the season, and I’m the same player.

“I’m going to continue to play at this level. Rebounding, defending the paint and being able to provide offense. I have a chip on my shoulder, I could sense people were writing me off …

“Don’t write me off just yet.”

Favors is still just 26 years old after entering the NBA in 2010.

“I’ve grown a lot over my career, understanding how I can impact the game and play to my strengths,” Favors told The Vertical. “Since I’m able to play both frontcourt positions, that allows me to man the five and play with Rudy, too. I know I can bring our team a lot of value being able to space the floor, defend bigger fives and fours, pick-and-pop. I want to fill my role and show that I’m the same player I have been when I’m given the chances.”

Teams work to monitor his progress ahead of the 2018 offseason.

“I let my agent, Wallace Prather, talk to Utah and talk around the league, I just focus on myself,” he said. “I’m aware of the talks, and the value I have, but I just focus on the opportunity I have now, and I know I can help whichever team I’m playing on in this league.

“I’m not taking the opportunity in front of me for granted.”
