Wizards Open To Making Moves

Dec 31, 2009 3:47 PM

Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld has resisted offers for forwards Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison in recent years, but that could change due to the team's struggles.

A person with knowledge of the situation told the Washington Post that no player is untouchable. Recently deceased owner Abe Pollin was against breaking up the trio of Gilbert Arenas, Butler and Jamison, but no such restrictions remain.

"It depends on how things go and what opportunities present themselves," Grunfield said when asked about potential moves on Wednesday.

Saunders: I Came Here To Win A Title

Dec 30, 2009 8:00 AM

Wizards coach Flip Saunders called out his team following their loss to the Thunder on Tuesday night.

"This team needs a mind-set change," Saunders said. "This team, for the last five years has been known as one of the worst defensive teams in the league. We could take five guys in this room out here and we could have a chance. I think I can go out there on the floor and take anybody on the team, one-on-one at [54] years old, and drive right around them. They can't guard anybody."

Washington dropped to 10-20 with the loss, a record far below expectations considering their three All-Star players in Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison.

"I didn't come here to make the playoffs," Saunders said. "I came here to win a championship. We need a total mind-set change about how we're going to do that. Until we have that -- and that's from everybody, staff and players and everybody is committed to that -- we're going to have games like this where we're going to hang around, hang around and then when it comes times to make stops and if you don't have an ability to do it, you're going to lose games."

Saunders went as far as to threaten changes to the team's lineup.

"It's all up in the air now," he said. "If guys don't like it, I'm fine, because that's the way it's going to be. I'm not going to sit there and stand there and look at that anymore."

Police Probe Guns At Verizon Center

Dec 30, 2009 7:49 AM

Police in Washington D.C. said Tuesday that they are investigating a report that weapons were found inside a locker room at the Verizon Center.

Last week, the Wizards said that guard Gilbert Arenas stored unloaded firearms in a container in his locker at the arena and that the NBA was looking into the situation.

"They've been [investigating] for the last two weeks," Arenas said Tuesday night. "You guys just found out about it."

Arenas said he was cooperating with the investigation and that he hadn't brandished the weapons in the team's dressing room.

"They just want to know where I got them from," Arenas said. "They want to make sure they're not dirty guns."

Saunders: Wizards A 'Long-Term Project'

Dec 28, 2009 7:46 AM

The Wizards haven't been as good as many expected this season, but new coach Flip Saunders isn't ready to vary from his principles.

"You go back to principles, and it's like pounding on a rock. You keep pounding and pounding, and eventually you break it down," Saunders said. "But you can't vary away from the process of where you want to go. ... It's a long-term project - that's what you have to understand."

Maintaining his philosophies is one thing, but this Washington team wasn't considered a "long-term project" when the season began.

The Wizards are 10-18 and have endured two separate six-game losing skids.

"It's like I told our players: As coaches, I'm not going to change what we do - a coverage defensively or something - just because we don't do it hard or do it right," Saunders said. "When you don't do it hard or do it right, no matter what you do, it's not going to work.

"Until we decide that we get upset when we miss defensive assignments as much as we get upset when we don't get the ball on offense, we're not going to take that next step."

Arenas Was Keeping Guns From Daughter

Dec 25, 2009 5:53 PM

Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas stored unloaded firearms in his locker, according to the team.

The NBA is looking into the situation and Washington released a statement on Thursday saying that there was no ammunition in the locked containers.

Arenas told The Washington Times that he took the guns to the Verizon Center after his daughter was born this month. About a week later, he said he handed them over to team security to give to police.

"I wouldn't have brought them to D.C. had I known the rules," Arenas told the newspaper. "After my daughter was born, I was just like, 'I don't need these anymore.' "

The NBA's collective bargaining agreement allows for players to legally possess firearms but prohibits them at league facilities or when traveling on any league-related business.

"We're aware of the situation and are working to gain a full understanding of the facts and relevant legal issues," the NBA said in a release.

Arenas Bruises Thigh In Win

Dec 24, 2009 9:01 AM

Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas left the team's win over the Bucks on Wednesday night with a bruised thigh.

Arenas had 18 points before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with the injury.

"I wear pads, but for some reason I keep getting kneed where the pads aren't. Since I was sitting there, we went on a run," Arenas said. "Earl [Boykins] finished where I left off."

Washington beat Milwaukee 109-97 as Boykins scored 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Foye Isn't Sure Why He's Lost Time

Dec 21, 2009 4:44 PM

Wizards guard Randy Foye has fallen out of favor recently and he isn't exactly sure why.

"Honestly, I don't know," Foye said. "I got hurt, and Earl [Boykins] came in and played well. I tip my hat to him. I don't ask no questions; I just come to work every day, just play as hard as I can, work out extra and I know how this league is: My time will come. It will change for me. I just have to keep working."

Washington coach Flip Saunders said there are a few reasons for Foye's decrease in minutes.

"He's had a couple tough things. One, Earl has come in and played well, and so [Foye] hasn't gotten much time at [point guard], and two, we went with DeShawn [Stevenson] to get a defensive presence to make sure our main guys knew at the beginning of games that they were going to get their shots, which I think has worked well. And then Nick has played well," Saunders explained.

"The best thing for a guy like that is to do the little things: defend, get a rebound, get a loose ball, get to the free throw line, you knock down a couple points. Doing little things will get you big results."

Jamison Feels Bad For Warriors Fans

Dec 21, 2009 11:30 AM

Antawn Jamison continues to follow the Warriors closely, the franchise he began his career with.

"This is where I started, so for me it's tough because of how much the fans love and support basketball here," said Jamison. "To have a team make it to the playoffs and seem like it's going in the right direction and all of a sudden, guys don't want to be here anymore. It kind of took me by surprise. This is a great place, with great fans. I feel bad for them."

Gilbert Arenas used to follow his former team, but not as much anymore.

"I used to know the guys on this team, go over and high-five 'em," said Arenas. "I don't really know anybody anymore."

Arenas Says He Lacks 'Killer Mode'

Dec 20, 2009 4:11 PM

Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas says he lacks the killer instinct that he had just a few seasons ago.

"My mind is not in killer mode," Arenas told Yahoo! Sports. "I haven't thought killer in two years. It's like I've been laid off. It's like getting an assassin, putting him in a box and making him watch TV. He can't go back to straight killing. Now he has a conscience. Before, I didn't.

"I just got to play. Play, play, play and get frustrated on the court."

Arenas is averaging 22.0 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds for the Wizards, who are a disappointing 8-17 entering Sunday's action.
