Wall Believes He, Beal Form Top Five Backcourt

Jul 28, 2013 2:43 PM

John Wall believes that he and Bradley Beal form one of the best backcourts in the NBA -- when healthy.

“I feel if both of us stay healthy, we’ll be top-five, top-six best back courts in the league,” Wall said. “Him as a young player, he’s very mature. He knows how the game goes. He’s just like me, a competitive person.”

The Wizards went 16-9 in games with both Beal and Wall in the lineup and 13-44 without one of them on the floor last season.

Wall and Beal both believe they will be 100 percent healthy for training camp.

Wall Has No Problem Coming Off Bench For Team USA

Jul 26, 2013 11:19 AM

John Wall was forced to come off the bench behind Damian Lillard during Team USA’s Blue-White scrimmage on Thursday.

Wall said he is not concerned about starting.

“When I’m playing for my country, as long as I got USA across my chest, I don’t care if I’m the 12th man, as long as I’m playing,” Wall said. “When you’re out there, you have an opportunity to put that on your chest, it’s a humbling experience and all of us are so talented, the coaches fit whatever lineup that they feel is right. I mean, look at Russell Westbrook. Coming off the bench, he gave the USA a good spark, so I don’t mind that. With USA basketball, it’s different than what you would do with your own team in the NBA.”

Wall finished with 10 points, two rebounds and two assists as his Blue team lost, 128-106, to the White team.

“I just tried to be aggressive,” Wall said. “It’s kind of tough to be aggressive when you got so many talented players, so my job wasn’t to go out there to score. Just to set everybody up and run the team as much as possible. I was just coming in and being a leader, playing my role as a point guard and help my team as much as possible and just try to do the same thing that a lot of guys in the past did, that played for the Olympic team.”

Wall's Extension With Wizards Unlikely To Be Finalized Until Next Week

Jul 25, 2013 6:24 PM

John Wall and the Washington Wizards are unlikely to come to a final agreement on a contract extension until at least next week.

Wall and the Wizards are working on the final details of a five-year, $80 million contract that would run through the 18-19 season.

The Wizards want to prevent Wall from becoming a restricted free agent next offseason.

“If you know you want to give somebody the max, why wait?” said a source with knowledge of the situation.

Vesely Hoping For Confidence Boost Out Of Summer League

Jul 22, 2013 12:54 PM

Jan Vesely was the sixth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, but has struggled to become a regular part of the Washington Wizards' rotation.

"It's going to be my third season. It's time to break [through]," Vesely said after the Wizards' final summer league game Friday. "I was working hard last month, and I have a long summer in front of me. I'm really looking forward to playing for the national team and getting ready before training camp starts. I'm really looking forward to this summer and next season to play."

"He's got to play with confidence," Randy Wittman said during one Wizards game on NBA TV last week. "He's got great length, great size, speed. Defensively, he gets in the passing lanes. [But] he's got to believe in himself. Coming from overseas, he had never played this caliber of basketball before. I think he's gone through a couple of situations early on where he doesn't believe in himself. Let me tell you what: You can be the best basketball player, but if you don't have confidence, you aren't going to be worth a crap."

"Seeing it in practice is one thing, but seeing it in a game, putting it in a game, is another," Vesely said. "I felt good this week. Like I said, it helped me a lot with the confidence. But still, I have a lot of work to do."

Vesely will compete in the EuroBasket this September for the Czech Republic.
