John Wall: Money 'Not Why I Play The Game'

Aug 27, 2016 1:43 PM

John Wall replied in a video posted online Friday to apparent critics who have voiced concerns over how he is "watching other people's pockets and I'm not worried about basketball and getting better."

Wall was reportedly irked in particular by Bradley Beal's new deal.

"I just wanted to clear the air for all these people," Wall said in a video published to the Twitter feed of the LeBron James media platform "The Uninterrupted."

"Listen, that doesn't matter to me," Wall said. "If I produce like I'm supposed to on the basketball court and take care of myself and image, I'm going to be fine with making money. That's not why I play the game of basketball."

Wall's comments follow interviews he and Beal had this week.

Beal signed a five-year, $128 million max contract this offseason with Wall in the middle of an $80 million deal that runs through the 2018 season.

"Me, talking about Bradley Beal [making] more money, I'm not mad. I'm happy. He's my teammate," Wall said Friday. "He came out at the right time when the contract money came up. I can't control that."

John Wall 'Rankled' By James Harden's Extension

Aug 25, 2016 8:05 PM

John Wall recently admitted he and Bradley Beal sometimes "dislike each other on the court" in an interview.

“Wall’s got jealousy issues. He’s always upset with someone who makes more money than him," said one source.

An agent described Wall's situation with Beal like this: “Whatever is public, multiply it by five and that’s how they really feel about each other. It’s probably a total disaster.”

A front-office executive says that Wall was “rankled” after James Harden signed a four-year, $118 million extension with the Rockets.

John Wall: Bradley Beal And I Have A Tendency To Dislike Each Other On Court

Aug 23, 2016 7:11 PM

John Wall admitted that he and Bradley Beal occasionally dislike each other on the court.

The Washington Wizards re-signed Beal this offseason. Wall signed an $80 million deal for five years in 2013 for what was then a max deal under a $58.7 million salary cap. Beal signed his max for five years under a $94.1 million cap.

"I think a lot of times we have a tendency to dislike each other on the court. … We got to be able to put that to the side. If you miss somebody on one play or don’t have something go right ... as long as you come to each other and talk. If I starting arguing with somebody I’m cool. I’m just playing basketball," Wall said.

"Now that you have your money you got to go out there and improve your game. I want you to be an All-Star just as much as I’m an All-Star.  If we were playing well as a tandem like the other two superstars that play together as a backcourt, play as a tandem, one night it’s going to be his night, one night it’s going to be mine, some nights it might be both of us. Those are nights it’s going to be tough to beat us."

Wall is willing to share the individual success with Beal.

“I want it all to be on me. At the same time I want him to be right there with me. He’s my sidekick. I’m A. He’s A-1. He’s right there," Wall said. "That’s something we got to do on the first day of training camp. We have to go in there and understand and get on the same page.

"If we’re not on the same page and we have our ups and downs we’ll keep dealing with the same problems. We have to get control of it. I think it’s hanging out off the court, doing those little things (helps)."
