MILWAUKEE – Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was moved to tears, red-eyed, on Saturday night when asked about his former Marquette coach, Rick Majerus. Rivers spent all three of his seasons with the Warriors under then-assistant Majerus, and it was in a summer camp where the coach gave him the longstanding nickname “Doc.”
After compiling a 517-216 record at four colleges, Majerus passed away Saturday at the age of 64 due to heart failure.
“That’s a tough one for me,” Rivers said after the Celtics’ 91-88 loss to the Bucks. “He’s the one who gave me my name. I knew before [the game] that he wasn’t going to make it through tonight. I don’t want to talk too much about it.”
Majerus had a tremendous run at Utah from 1989 to 2004, leading the university to a 323-95 record. He became Marquette’s head coach in 1983, following Rivers’ departure through the NBA draft.
Rick Majerus has passed away at the age of 64 in a Los Angeles hospital due to heart failure.
Majerus had a history of heart problems and announced last month that he would not be returning as head coach of Saint Louis due to his heart condition.
Majerus had an overall record of 517-216 at four colleges, including an outstanding 323-95 mark at Utah from 1989-2004.
Rick Majerus has retired because of a serious heart condition.
Majerus already had taken a leave of absence this season from Saint Louis to address his health issues.
On Friday afternoon, the school announced that he would be unable to return to coaching at any point.
“Coach Majerus’ health is of the utmost importance, and our thoughts and prayers are with him as he faces his challenges,” Saint Louis athletics director Chris May said in a statement. “We are thankful for Rick’s efforts as he succeeded by all accounts as our head men’s basketball coach. This is an exciting season for the program, and we think it is important to communicate, with transparency, to the student-athletes, staff and our loyal fans that Rick will not be returning. Majerus remains in California to deal with the problem."
Majerus retires with a 517-216 record in 25 years as a head coach at Marquette, Ball State, Utah and Saint Louis.
John Dawson verbally committed Thursday to Marquette.
Dawson, a 6-foot-2 combo guard from Clovis High School in New Mexico, was reportedly pursued by Texas-El Paso Wyoming, Creighton, Auburn and Colorado State.
Kendrick Nunn has committed to John Groce and Illinois over Marquette, Memphis and Ohio State.
Nunn is a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Simeon High School of Chicago, the same school as Jabari Parker.
Nunn is rated No. 56 in the ESPN 100.
"It means for Illinois now they have secured a commitment from a high-level player not only from the state of Illinois, but the city of Chicago," ESPN recruiting coordinator Reggie Rankin said. "I think that possibly can open doors for future players. I think it's a great fit for Nunn because he'll be terrific in Groce's style of play. He'll be able to attack on the break, slash in the halfcourt and play on and away from ball screens. I think it's just a win-win situation for both of them."
Kendrick Nunn is set to visit Illinois this weekend, his father, Melvin Nunn, confirmed.
"It was the way the schedule best fit in," the elder Nunn said, "and it's our state school."
Kendrick, a standout guard at Chicago Simeon, plans to visit Memphis from Sept. 21-23, UCLA from Sept. 28-30, Ohio State from Oct. 5-7 and Marquette from Oct. 12-14.
"It's going to be maybe days after his last visit, probably mid-October by that third week of October," Melvin said of plans to announce his son's college decision. "But we want to be completely done and signed in November."
Stephen Clark, a top-100 player in the class of 2013, has scheduled in-home visits with Baylor, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Florida State, Marquette, Missouri and Tulsa.
The 5-foot-10 Clark is not expected to make a college commitment until spring.
