The event gives front offices the opportunity to evaluate D-League players with the possibility of offering Summer League or training camp invites. Read More.
Tyus Jones, the No. 2 overall recruit for 2014 and an excellent point guard, was selected by Paul Biancardi, Adam Finkelstein and John Stovall. Read More.
Tim Hardaway Jr. has signed with Priority Sports & Entertainment and will be represented by Mark Bartelstein.
Bartelstein is the father of former Michigan guard Josh Bartelstein, who was a teammate of Hardaway's for the past three seasons.
Josh Bartelstein helped counsel Hardaway, Trey Burke, Glenn Robinson III and Mitch McGary on their draft decisions.
"I'm in a really special position because of my dad," Josh said. "I've listened to my dad talk on the phone to a ton of guys, telling them to go back to school or telling them to go out.
Gary Harris will return for his sophomore season at Michigan State.
Harris was projected as a first-round pick in the upcoming NBA draft.
"When the season was done, Coach (Tom) Izzo gathered a lot of great information and shared it with me and my family," Harris said in a statement. “After talking things over with my parents, it is my decision to remain at Michigan State.
"Playing in the NBA is definitely a goal of mine, and something that I've always dreamed of, but those dreams can wait for another day. I think additional experience and maturity will be huge in my development as a player.”
Harris averaged 12.9 points while dealing with an injury to his left shoulder.
Izzo confirmed that Harris will not need surgery during the offseason.
"He's been committed to his rehab and all indications are that he's making great progress," Izzo said. "There's no question that a healthy Gary Harris is one of the premier guards in the country."
Gary Harris and Adreian Payne chose not to request evaluations from the NBA draft advisory committee.
Instead, Tom Izzo is seeking advice from NBA decision-makers.
One scout said Harris "has a good body,'' for the NBA, but "he's been inconsistent,'' concluding that as far as this year's draft, "I'm not seeing Top 10 when I look at him.''
John Beilen said that Trey Burke, Mitch McGary, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III are currently being reviewed by the NBA draft advisory board.
“We were very proactive and met with them that next morning (after the NCAA title game loss in Atlanta) before we got on the plane to come back,” Beilein said. “I advised them all they should all go the NBA advisory committee and see what they think, so that’s the process right now.”
Beilein said there has been no feedback yet, and it will be confidential when it does come back -- but that will play a large role in the decision-making.
“Let’s find out from the real guys that know it,” Beilein said. “They have been so accurate in the past few years as to what their advice was to our players and many players, so I do trust it.”
Cody Zeller will announce his intention to leave school early for the NBA draft.
Zeller, a 7-foot sophomore, led Indiana in scoring (16.1) and rebounding (7.3) en route to a Big Ten championship and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Zeller is projected by most as an NBA lottery pick.
John Beilein sees similarities in the floor game and leadership capabilities of Trey Burke and Chris Paul.
"It’s probably unfair to compare anyone to (Paul)," Beilein said. "... But there are certainly many similarities. They can hit the in-between jump shot, he has a great pace to game. Paul has worked so hard at his game and he’s elevated it like the way we hope Trey can one day. This young man’s got a fire in his belly to be the best player he can be and make his team win.
"I have a sense that if you check Chris Paul, he’s probably got that same fire."
Burke studies top point guards like Paul, Rajon Rondo and Tony Parker.
"When you watch those guys, they’re more than just great point guards out there on the court," Burke said. "They’re actual leaders and the coach on the court. You want to model yourself after guys like that because you have your teammates’ respect.
"Instead of criticizing them in negative ways, you can go up to them and tell them what you see or tell them what you feel like you need to do so it can be done."
Deshaun Thomas will forego his senior season of eligibility and enter the NBA draft.
"My three years at Ohio State have been the best years of my life,” Thomas said in a statement released by the school. “I have grown tremendously as an individual and as a basketball player. I intend to return to finish my degree, but I believe that now is the best opportunity to pursue my dream and begin my career as a professional basketball player.”
Thomas, a 6-foot-7 forward, is projected as a late-first to early-second round pick.
Thomas led the Buckeyes while scoring 19.8 points per game this season, and finished ninth on Ohio State's all-time scoring list with 1,630 points.
Tom Izzo thinks Gary Harris will return for a second season at Michigan State.
Harris had perhaps his worst outing of the season against Duke – six points on 2-for-11 shooting – while allowing 29 points to Blue Devils fifth-year senior Seth Curry.
"I don't know if it was the pressure of being home, the pressure of the tournament, but I love the kid,” Izzo said after the Spartans' 71-61 loss to Duke. “He's going to grow and learn from this. That's what you do. That's why this tournament is so brutal."
Harris hinted at a possible return.
"We've got a lot of people coming back," Harris said. "We're only losing one player, so we're going to have a talented team next year, so we're just going to get ready to put in all the work in the offseason and preseason."
Izzo indicated Harris might need surgery to repair a lingering shoulder injury.
"You have not seen the Gary Harris I recruited yet," Izzo said. "Now he performed better in some ways than I thought he would as a freshman, but as far as the aggressive, take-it-to-the-hole, go-get-a-rebound, we haven't seen him yet."
Trey Burke said that winning a national championship this season would make it easier for him declare for the NBA draft.
“It would probably definitely make my decision much easier, which is to leave,” Burke said on the Dan Patrick Show. “Because that’s really today’s culture. If you get that far as a team, you have those opportunities, you definitely have to look into them and make sure you’re making the right decision.
"But that’s just something that I’ll talk over with my family and try to come out with something at the end of the season.”
