Feb 29, 2008 11:20 PM

John Wooden broke his left wrist and collarbone in a fall, leaving the former UCLA basketball coach hospitalized Friday, according to an Associated Press report.

Daughter Nan Muehlhausen said the 97-year-old Wooden fell in his condominium Thursday night. She said Wooden was resting comfortably in a hospital and visited with family members throughout the day.

"Dad's spirits are good," Muehlhausen said in a statement. "He is up and joking around with the family. He will probably be in the hospital for a couple of more days before he goes home."

Kentucky's Patterson Out For Season

Feb 29, 2008 2:40 PM

A stress fracture in Patrick Patterson's left ankle will sideline him for the remainder of his freshman season at Kentucky.

Patterson has averaged 16.4 and 7.7 rebounds per game.

"All of our games have been desperate situations, except Vanderbilt, so they've come down to the last five minutes," Kentucky Coach Billy Gillispie said. "They've been like tournament games, down to the last three or four possessions. That's helping with our confidence."

Tennessee Scores #1 Ranking

Feb 25, 2008 3:20 PM

The Tennessee Volunteers scored a #1 ranking for the first time in school history on Monday following their road win at undefeated Memphis on Saturday.

The Volunteers received 69 out of 72 first place votes.

"The response has been overwhelming here," Tennessee Coach Bruce Pearl said Monday. "The game Saturday, there'll always be a lot of talk of where were you when they beat Memphis to become No. 1? It was that kind of event so it will have some staying power, but for us there will be little staying power because we have to go play at Vanderbilt on Tuesday where they have won 17 straight games."

"The fact that men's basketball was able to get to this point just brings us in line with the other sports here, men's and women's, like softball and track and field. This is the expectation at Tennessee and that you can point to those different sports is why Tennessee is one of the finest athletic programs in the country, and this only adds to that."

Michigan Honors Fab Five's Rose

Feb 24, 2008 6:48 PM

Jalen Rose was honored by Michigan during halftime of the team's game against Illinois on Sunday for his charitable work in Detroit, according to the Associated Press.

"I guess this is a day to start moving in the right direction," Rose told the AP before the game. "I see this as the first step."

All evidence of the Fab Five's accomplishments have been removed from the record books following Chris Webber's alleged involvement with a Michigan booster.

The team's Final Four banner has been placed in storage, and the Wolverines have a record of 0-70 for those two famed seasons.

"Every time you see the black shoes, the black socks, and the baggy shorts, the Fab Five lives," he told the crowd at halftime. "And I'll be back here one day when those banners go back up."

Dyson will be eligible to play for the Huskies against Rutgers on Tuesday night.

"We'll see where he fits in," Coach Jim Calhoun told the AP on Saturday. "I fully expect I would start the same team. There's no reason why I wouldn't start the same team at Rutgers that we have right now."

Tennessee Knocks Off No. 1 Memphis

Feb 24, 2008 12:37 AM

Tyler Smith hit a turnaround jumper in the lane with 26.5 seconds left, and No. 2 Tennessee knocked off the nation?s last unbeaten team, edging top-ranked Memphis 66-62 on Saturday night, according to an Associated Press report.

Tennessee won on a night when guard Chris Lofton scored only 7 points, beating the Tigers with a dominating performance on the boards. Lofton did finish it off, though, hitting a couple of free throws with 4.5 seconds to go after Memphis intentionally missed at the line.

Memphis lost at home for the first time since January 2, 2006, ending the nation?s longest home winning streak at 47 games.
