UConn's Calhoun Has Skin Cancer Again

Connecticut Head Coach Jim Calhoun is being treated for a second bout of skin cancer but expects to be coaching the team this fall, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Calhoun is entering his 22nd season with the Huskies.

"I want to coach basketball at UConn," the 66-year-old Hall of Famer said Friday. "At this moment, I love what I do and feel very, very comfortable in doing that."

Calhoun will undergo six weeks of radiation treatments beginning in June at the UConn Health Center to minimize any chance of the cancer returning.

"I have one more step to go," Calhoun said. "I feel much, much better, thank God."

Agent Drops Mayo Due To Allegations Intensity

Agent Calvin Andrews has parted ways with prized client O.J. Mayo because of the allegations that Andrews' agency provided improper cash and benefits to a close friend of Mayo, Ben Bolch of the L.A. Times is reporting.

"Due to the overwhelming intensity of recent allegations regarding the recruitment of O.J. Mayo, we feel that our representation of him is a distraction for he and his family at this time," Andrews said in a statement.

"This should be the best time in his life and anything that takes away from that enjoyment and the experience of this process is not fair to him. We will maintain the greatest support and best wishes for him through this time and throughout what promises to be an excellent career for a very deserving young man."

BYU Center Trent Plaisted Agrees To Sign With Agent

Center Trent Plaisted has agreed to sign with an agent, giving up his option to return to BYU for his final season of eligibility, as reported by the Associated Press.

Plaisted announced last month he was entering the NBA draft but didn?t plan to sign with an agent.

Agent Mark Bartelstein said Friday that Plaisted has agreed to sign with Priority Sports and should be officially signed within the next day or two.

Jarvis To Coach Florida Atlantic?

Former St. John?s Coach Mike Jarvis is considered a candidate to take over Florida Atlantic?s men's basketball program but has not been offered a deal, spokeswoman Katrina McCormick said Friday, according to an Associated Press report.

McCormick said any offer made by AD Craig Angelos would have to first be reviewed by the university?s trustees. She said a board meeting might be held next week.

KU Star Darrell Arthur's Eligibility Questioned

Questions about whether Kansas star Darrell Arthur may have been ineligible to play at his Dallas high school has fueled speculation about whether he should have ever played for Kansas, the Associated Press is reporting.

A math teacher at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas told WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth that Arthur's grades were improperly altered to show he passed math when he hadn't.

Brand: NCAA Obtains 'New Information' On Mayo

NCAA President Myles Brand has promised to investigate former USC guard O.J. Mayo, saying that the NCAA has new information about the allegations that Mayo received thousands of dollars in gifts from money given to an event promoter by a sports agency.

According to the report on ESPN.com, ESPN reported on Sunday that Bill Duffy Associates provided Rodney Guillory with about $200,000 before Mayo arrived at USC. Louis Johnson, a former associate of Mayo's, told "Outside the Lines" that Mayo received about $30,000 and other benefits from Guillory while in high school and during his one season at USC.

Mayo declared for the NBA draft after the season and hired BDA Sports' Calvin Andrews as his agent.

DeRozan Might Ask Out If Trojans Are Punished In Mayo Case

DeMar DeRozan, one of the nation's most highly sought high school players, may bail on his commitment to USC if the Trojans are punished in relation to the allegations made against guard O.J. Mayo, the L.A. Times are reporting.

This is a good wake-up call," Jermaine DeRozan, DeMar's half-brother, said. "I'm just hoping SC doesn't get put on probation [If it does], I would get . . . out of there."

Huggins Is Released From Hospital After Fall

Bob Huggins underwent precautionary tests and was released from a Charlotte, N.C. hospital on Thursday after tripping on an airport tarmac and hitting his head on the pavement, according to ESPN.com.

Athletic director Ed Pastilong said that Huggins had a bump on his head, but he never lost consciousness.

Apparently Huggins was checking his phone messages when he tripped over a cone on the tarmac, causing him to fall.

Former Confidant Says Mayo Took Gifts At USC

According to a report on ESPN.com, potential lottery pick O.J. Mayo received thousands of dollars in cash, clothes, and other benefits in apparent violation of NCAA rules while he was still in high school and during his one year at USC, a former Mayo associate told ESPN's "Outside the Lines."

Louis Johnson, who was a part of Mayo's inner circle until recently, said Mayo accepted around $30,000 in cash and gifts during the past four years from Rodney Guillory, a 43-year-old Los Angeles event promoter.

In exchange for the payments and gifts, Mayo entered into a verbal agreement to allow BDA represent him when he turned pro.

Kentucky Gets Verbal Commitment From 8th Grader

Kentucky Head Coach Billy Gillispie offered a basketball scholarship to 6-foot-4 guard Michael Avery of Lake Sherwood, Calif., over the weekend.

Avery is currently in the 8th grade and hasn't even decided where he's going to high school, but he's already accepted an offer to play basketball for the University of Kentucky.
