Kyle Anderson has been cleared by the NCAA to play for UCLA.
"I know there were rumors about my family receiving stuff," Kyle Anderson Sr. told USA TODAY Sports in a telephone interview. "I actually moved out of my apartment and live with one of my fraternity brothers so I can save money so I can travel to see Kyle play. For all the rumors that said I received $250,000, ... I am a 50-year-old roommate."
Anderson Sr., also his son's summer league coach, said "anyone who knows this business knows I don't have to shop Kyle around. The vultures are going to come get him. I have a very unique position that the vultures — be it the college coaches or the agents — all know that I am in this business, so there is no reason to bombard me with phone calls because all my ducks are in line."
Karl Towns Jr., a 7-foot center ranked as the No. 1 player for 2015, sports a 4.3 grade-point average and last year served as president of his high school class.
“The best part is he’s just a humble kid,” Karl Towns Sr. said.
Towns is expected to choose between Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky.
Darius Thompson will take an official visit to Butler this weekend, according to his coach at Blackman (TN) High School.
“Butler has done a good job of recruiting Darius,” coach Barry Wortman said. “There’s a good comfort level with them as well as Murray State and Middle Tennessee State.”
Thompson, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 12.8 points and 6.0 assists last season for Blackman.
“Darius has a high, high basketball IQ,” Wortman said. “A very good feel for the game. Sneaky athletic. He shoots the ball well from 3, can get out on the point, can play off the ball.”
Dez Wells transferred to Maryland last month, but the NCAA has denied his request for a waiver that would have made him eligible to play this season.
"I'm just waiting to see what's going to happen," Wells said recently. "The anticipation does kind of build up. You kind of get like anxiety a little bit."
Wells, who was dismissed by Xavier after his freshman season, has three years of eligibility remaining.
Cody Zeller added more than nine pounds of muscle over the offseason.
“Our strength and conditioning coach was really good. A lot of lifting weights and a lot of eating everything. I put on a lot of muscle,” Zeller said when asked about his offseason training regimen. “We did a body fat test and I think I gained nine and a half pounds of muscle and lost two pounds of fat. It was good weight, too. So I don’t think I’ve lost any mobility and I can still run.”
Zeller was listed at 6-foot-11, 230 pounds last season.
“It will help all aspects of the game,” Zeller said of his added strength. “Posting up, rebounding, you know the guys in the Big Ten are so big you’ve got to have strength and weight. I think it will help me a lot this year.”
