Florida And Ohio State To Meet For NCAA Championship

Mar 31, 2007 11:47 PM

The Florida Gators and their in-demand coach, Billy Donovan, moved one win away from a second straight national championship Saturday night, defeating the Bruins 76-66 behind 19 points from Corey Brewer, 16 from Chris Richard and 14 more from Lee Humphrey.

Donovan got the best of Ben Howland and Florida got the best of UCLA for the second straight year at the Final Four, adding this semifinal win to a 73-57 rout in last year's title game.

"This is what it's all about," Gators forward Joakim Noah said. "We know it's not over yet. We're happy, but we're not satisfied."

This victory for the Gators (34-5) set up another sort of rematch. They'll play Ohio State on Monday in the final, hoping for the same kind of result as their 27-point victory in the championship football game earlier this year. The Buckeyes beat Georgetown 67-60 in the first semifinal Saturday.

Durant Leaving Door Open To Texas Return

Mar 31, 2007 8:42 PM

Despite one of the best freshman seasons in recent history, Texas phenom Kevin Durant still is not sold that a jump to the NBA is the right move for him at this point, nor does he want people to assume that it is the most logical choice.

"The NBA can wait," Durant told ESPN.com. "I love college so much and if I decide to stay, that's going to show a lot of freshmen that they don't have to go to college just for one year.

"I love my family so much at Texas and I really don't want to leave them," Durant said. "[The NBA] is my dream but it's going to be a hard decision."

Ohio State Moves Into Championship Game

Mar 31, 2007 8:37 PM

Ohio State showed it can win without Greg Oden. Georgetown was just lost without Roy Hibbert.

With Hibbert and Oden both hampered by foul trouble, it was Mike Conley Jr. and the rest of the Buckeyes who carried Ohio State to its first national title game since 1962 with a 67-60 victory over Georgetown on Saturday night.

Conley finished with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Oden added 13 points -- all in the second half -- and eight rebounds in 20 minutes.

Hibbert scored 19 and had six rebounds in 24 minutes for the Hoyas, and more than held his own in the much-anticipated matchup with Oden.

Ohio State will now face the winner of the UCLA-Florida game.

Final Four Holding Up Allen's Ankle Surgery

Mar 31, 2007 8:27 PM

If it weren't for UCLA playing in today's men's Final Four, Sonics guard Ray Allen would have had surgery on his injured left ankle this week. Instead, Allen will have the season-ending procedure April 7 because the operating doctor promised his daughter, a Bruins fan, that he'd take her to the event in Atlanta.

"I'm in a holding pattern right now," Allen joked. "When the game [between UCLA and Kansas] was on the other day, you know who I was rooting against."

Dr. Richard Ferkel will perform the surgery to remove the large bone spurs in Allen's left ankle at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Los Angeles. Allen is contemplating also having scar tissue in his right ankle repaired simultaneously because the anesthesia causes nausea.

Rehab Setback Stalls Stojakovic's Hornets Return

Mar 31, 2007 8:20 PM

New Orleans Hornets guard Peja Stojakovic said Friday that a setback in his rehab from back surgery will further delay his return to the court.

"It got a little sore and stiffer," said Stojakovic, a three-time All-Star who had a disc fragment removed from his lower back Dec. 17. "I'm going to relax a couple days and get some medication and see how it goes."

The Hornets had planned to re-evaluate Stojakovic to see whether he would be able to play Saturday night against the New York Knicks but Stojakovic was unable to go through practice Friday. He started the session by shooting, but said he started to stiffen up when he started running. He worked out with trainers instead of practicing with teammates.
