Self Wants Jayhawks To Play With More 'Personality'

Dec 27, 2011 4:21 PM

Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self said he’s seeking improvement in a lot of areas, including setting screens and running offense to score, as well as defending for the entire shot clock.

“If I was going to pick something I’d want to happen more than anything else ... we don’t play with a personality,” Self said. “We do not play with the personality where it shines through, and there’s energy exuding all personnel out there on the court.

“I don’t feel that yet. Certainly that’s something we’ve always done a great job in. It doesn’t have anything to do with trying hard, nothing like that. It has more to do with understanding: ‘OK, this is what we need, and if we do this, we’ll become better defenders; we’ll do this; we’ll do that.’”

Terrence Jones Questionable After Dislocating Finger

Dec 19, 2011 3:21 PM

Kentucky coach John Calipari says forward Terrence Jones is questionable for the Wildcats’ game Tuesday night against Samford.

Jones dislocated his left-pinky finger in Saturday’s win over Chattanooga. The finger on his shooting hand bent awkwardly at an angle in the first half of Kentucky’s 87-62 victory over the Mocs.

Calipari said that Jones wouldn’t practice Monday with the third-ranked Wildcats.

Tyshawn Taylor Expected To Return Just Eight Days After Knee Surgery

Dec 18, 2011 10:38 PM

Kansas point guard Tyshawn Taylor is expected to play Monday against Davidson, just eight days after surgery to repair torn meniscus in his right knee.

"Yeah, I do. I do think he'll play, unless something happens negative today," Self said. "He's going to go up and down a few minutes today (in practice). Just a few. He won't play 30 minutes or anything. If he doesn't have a setback today, I think he'll be OK to at least play a little bit tomorrow."

Self said Taylor shot on Friday "pretty much full speed. We waited to see if there was any swelling, and there wasn't. He practiced yesterday some, but only half court. We waited to see today if there was much swelling, and there wasn't. We're going to let him go up and down today a little bit — 10 minutes, 15 minutes — and see how he does there. We'll wait and see tomorrow if there's any swelling. But if there's not, there's no reason he can't play some tomorrow."

Sullinger Likely To Return Saturday

Dec 14, 2011 3:31 PM

Ohio State team physician Grant Jones said there is a chance Jared Sullinger will return for Saturday’s game at South Carolina.

“It’s more likely going to be Saturday at the earliest that we can see his progress in terms of contact-type activities,” Jones said. “We’re going to make sure he’s fully recovered. The one thing we don’t want to do is put him back (on the court) too early, which could cause a setback, and if you get a setback now, that could mean a couple more weeks.”

Sullinger has not played since a Nov. 29 win over Duke due to back spasms.

Sullinger's MRI Shows Aggravated Disc, Could Be Related To Plantar Fasciitis

Dec 4, 2011 8:25 PM

Ohio State coach Thad Matta saw Sullinger's MRI on Friday, which showed an aggravated disk.

"I feel as at that point I'm Dr. Thad because of all the rooms I've been in, all the operating rooms, recovery rooms," Matta said after the Buckeyes' 64-35 win over Texas Pan-American. "Just as they were going through the testing I'm going, 'That's good, that's good, that's good' and saying that from my own experiences."

Matta said Sullinger — averaging 19.1 points and 10.3 rebounds this season — will be reevaluated Monday or Tuesday. No. 2 Ohio State (8-0) next plays at No. 15 Kansas on Dec. 10.

Sullinger's father, Satch, told The Columbus Dispatch that the spasms might be related to plantar fasciitis, an inflammation in the band between the heel and ball of the foot.
