Musselman Gets 2nd Interview After It Looked Like Job Was Whiseant's

May 31, 2006 6:18 PM

Memphis assistant and former Golden State head coach Eric Musselman will interview for a second time on Wednesday night in Las Vegas, one week after he became the first candidate to interview for the head coaching post.

The decision supports what sources within the Kings organization have confirmed, that Musselman has surpassed Monarchs coach John Whisenant as the frontrunner after it was believed Whisenant had already been chosen by Kings co-owners and longtime friends Joe and Gavin Maloof.

Sources who confirmed Musselman's second interview asked not to be identified out of fear of job reprisals.

Agent: Morrison Set To Gain 20 Pounds

May 31, 2006 5:50 PM

Mark Bartelstein, Chicago-based agent for players such as Brad Miller, Antoine Walker and Derek Fisher was interviewed by RealGM's Andrew Perna on Wednesday.  He is representing Adam Morrison of Gonzaga and James Augustine of Illinois in June's NBA Draft.

On which teams Adam Morrison will work out for:

?He?s going to work out for Toronto, Chicago, Charlotte and Portland as of now.?

On the best/worst case scenarios for Morrison come draft night:

?I try not to get into that too much because so many things can change ? trades and things like that. I know it?s biased, but in my opinion I think he?s the best player in this draft. I think he?s going to have a sensational career in the NBA. He?s a very unique player and I think the mistake people make is when they say that someone else has a bigger upside. Adam has a huge upside to his game, he?s a young guy. He?s going to put on another twenty pounds, which is going to make a gigantic difference and he?ll really help him evolve.?

On the ?unfair? comparisons to Larry Bird:

?I think obviously Larry Bird is one of the greatest players of all time, and so it?s flattering for anyone to compare Adam to Larry. I think there are similarities between the two, and that?s where people drew the comparison from, but I don?t want to put that on Adam. I think it?s too much pressure. He?s a great scorer, he can do it so many different ways, and he?s an unbelievable shooter, and shot-maker. He finds ways to create opportunities for himself, and he has a great feel for the game. Those are things you can?t teach, and he has them so I think that makes him pretty special.?

On James Augustine?s pre-draft workouts:

?He?s already worked out for a bunch of teams, and he?s scheduled to work out for a bunch more. He?s pretty booked up, and he?s done really well. I think he?s opened up a lot of eyes. He?s a really athletic big guy, who can run the floor like a deer. He?s a really tough kid, and knows how to make the kinds of winning plays. He also comes from a great program in Illinois. He?s going to be a really good NBA player.?

On Danny Granger?s surprising fall in last years? draft:

?I think at the beginning of the process he started as a second round pick, and then jumped up quite a bit. People started to see how special he was and he started moving up as a potential top ten pick. Then on draft day he fell a little bit but, he wound up in a great situation. He had a great year, made the All-Rookie team, and a lot of teams made a mistake. That?s the nature of the business, it?s a subjective decision. No one knows for sure what they have until a year or two later when you can begin to see who was right and who was wrong. You know, if the draft was today Danny would be a top ten, maybe even top five pick for sure. But, you can?t worry about those things. What you do is you make sure your players are as prepared as they possibly can be. You make sure they work hard as they possibly can and put their best foot forward. From that point on you sleep well, because your guy has done everything imaginable. Danny did that last year and I hope to have my guys doing that this year.?

Cuban Wants To See Shaq In Finals

May 31, 2006 5:16 PM

Mark Cuban is already thinking about what it would be like for the Mavericks to reach the NBA Finals.

"Everyone in Dallas is rooting for the Heat for two reasons,'' Cuban, whose team is favored to beat Phoenix in the Western finals, relayed via e-mail. ``We want to see Shaq in the Finals again, and it gives the Mavs home-court advantage.''

``Great for TV ratings. We can play our Shaq Albert video and crack Shaq up during the games. Shaq and I can give hand signals and see if we get caught. Most importantly, if the Mavs make it past the Suns, it would be great basketball between two great teams.''

NBA To Review Incident In Stands With Mavs Coach's Wife

May 31, 2006 9:01 AM

The NBA will investigate the incident involving Avery Johnson's wife and two fans which occured during Game 4 in Phoenix, ESPN.com is reporting.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and reserve center DJ Mbenga, who was inactive and in street clothes for Game 4, entered the stands late in the first quarter after Cassandra Johnson,  got into a dispute with two Suns fans.

Cuban and Mbenga were joined by team security coordinator Jim Colleran in a section overlooking the Mavs' bench to check on Cassandra Johnson. A misdemeanor assault complaint was reportedly later filed by the fans against Johnson for allegedly shoving and swearing at them.

It was not immediately known if Cuban or Mbenga are facing sanction from the league for going into the stands. NBA spokesman Brian McIntyre said the incident would be reviewed by the league office Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear whether the actions of an owner and/or an inactive player would be interpreted similarly.

Cuban tried to downplay the incident at halftime, calling it "a non-event."

Babcock Return To Wolves Appears Likely

May 31, 2006 6:18 AM

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Rob Babcock attended Tuesday's pre-draft workouts at Target Center, and a front-office position appears to be in his future. Babcock left his post as the Wolves' vice president of player personnel two years ago, when he was hired as general manager of the Toronto Raptors.

"He's helping us out," Wolves general manager Jim Stack said. "It remains to be seen what that's going to germinate into. It's tentative. I think Glen (Taylor, owner) has a good comfort level with him because he's been here for a lot of years. He's a guy we feel we can work easily with, and he's eager to be here, so hopefully it will work out as we go along."

The Raptors fired Babcock in January.

Raptors High On Spaniard

May 31, 2006 6:16 AM

According to the Spanish sports publication Marca, the Raptors have made overtures about signing free agent Jorge Garbajosa, a 6-9 Spanish forward. NBA officials who have seen the 28-year-old play make it sound like he'd be a great fit.

According to the Toronto Star, Garbajosa is said to be a tough inside presence despite his height and could also be able to stretch defences with three-point shooting ability. He's not a true NBA centre ? more along the lines of the undersized Kurt Thomas of the Phoenix Suns ? but he could do some of the dirty work under the basket to take some of the pressure off the likes of Chris Bosh and Charlie Villanueva.

Grizz Looking To Center

May 31, 2006 6:12 AM

According to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, the Grizzlies will be looking at big men in the upcoming NBA draft to try to solidify their frontcourt.

The Grizzlies' director of player personnel, Tony Barone Sr, says that the team's relunctance to take a chance on a big man may have to change this year.

"We keep investigating," Barone said Tuesday morning. "Maybe our standards have to change a little bit. Maybe we don't have to have a 7-footer. Maybe it's a 6-8, 6-9 guy who is going to bang and go after it that way. We have one in Lawrence Roberts, so we'll keep investigating and see what happens."

Denver's Yemi Nicholson (6-11 center), UCLA's Ryan Hollins (7-foot center), George Washington's Pops Mensah-Bonsu (6-9 forward) and Michigan State's Paul Davis (6-11 center) worked out for Griz personnel as they prepared for the June 28 draft.

"The biggest difference between college and the NBA is you still have to be able to make that 15-foot shot," Barone said. "That's one of the things we want to find out about these guys. The other part of it is the consistent banging and effort on the glass. In college, they can overwhelm the players they're playing against. They can muscle in and get it done. That's why on every drill we do -- even on defense -- you have to put the ball back in (the basket) so we can see that constant effort."
