Lakers Would Need To See 'Heck Of An Opportunity' To Trade No. 2 Pick

May 27, 2015 1:03 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers has not heard any enticing offers for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

“It would have to be a heck of an opportunity for us to consider doing something like that,” said Kupchak.

The Lakers would listen if presented a top-level veteran in exchange for the pick. Kupchak admitted that the Lakers are "a little bit impatient."

“If you came across something that made your team better quicker, it would probably be a veteran, then that’s something you would consider,” Kupchak said, “but there’s something to be said for having the No. 2 pick in terms of building going forward.”

The last time a team traded a top-two pick for a veteran was in 2001 when the Los Angeles Clippers traded the rights to Tyson Chandler to the Chicago Bulls for Elton Brand.

The top two prospects are widely considered to be Jahlil Okafor and Karl-Anthony Towns, but D'Angelo Russell and Emmanuel Mudiay could also enter the conversation.

“There’s the perception that there’s four players there (who could be drafted at No. 2),” Kupchak said. “I think there might be more.”

He said the Lakers will work out at least four players they could target with the second overall pick, but “hopefully six to eight.”

Nuggets Rebuilding Around Gallinari, Nurkic; Could Trade Lawson, Faried

May 22, 2015 12:34 PM

The Denver Nuggets are expected to make Ty Lawson and/or Kenneth Faried available in trade talks before the June 25th draft.

The Nuggets believe Danilo Gallinari and Jusuf Nurkic are the two centerpieces of their rebuilding efforts.

Denver figures to have cap space in the coming seasons, but free agency hasn't been an area of success for the franchise historically.

Lakers Had Handshake Agreement For Kevin Garnett In 2007

May 19, 2015 7:34 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly had a handshake agreement with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2007 on a trade of Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom for Kevin Garnett.

"Dr. [Jerry] Buss came to me and said, 'I have a handshake agreement with Taylor, that he's going to come to L.A. But (Kevin) McHale hasn't concurred yet.' So I said, 'Well that's a good excuse.' You always, as an owner, say, 'I'll do this, but …' So I kept that hope out there, that he was gonna be a part of the Laker organization," said Phil Jackson.

Taylor believed Bynum was going to become a star.

Garnett was eventually traded to the Boston Celtics for Al Jefferson, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes and a first round pick.

McHale's relationship with Ainge was believed to have helped facilitate the trade.

"I've always kind of hinted that, in fun. … Of course, it's easier to make a deal with someone you know," said Jackson.

The Phoenix Suns were offering Amar'e Stoudemire for Garnett.

The Lakers eventually acquired Pau Gasol without trading away Bynum or Odom, which led them to three Finals appearances and two titles.

Knicks Intrigued By Frank Kaminsky

May 15, 2015 8:34 PM

Frank Kaminsky believes he impressed Phil Jackson during an interview on Thursday at the NBA Draft Combine.

Kaminsky is projected to go closer to No. 10 in the draft, well beyond the New York Knicks' draft slot as they can select no worse than fifth.

“I’m 22 years old and I get treated like I’m 65 going into the NBA,’’ Kaminsky said.

The Knicks could conceivably trade down to pick up Kaminsky and another asset.

“I know they run the triangle and I think I can do well in that system,’’ Kaminsky said of the Knicks. “But the organization has to make the decision, not me. New York is a great place, storied history. I wouldn’t mind it at all. Carmelo Anthony is obviously one of the superstars — one of the best in my generation. To play alongside him would be a cool thing.’’

Spears: Aldridge For Griffin Sign-And-Trade Has Been Rumored

May 8, 2015 8:22 PM

LaMarcus Aldridge will be a free agent this offseason and Yahoo's Marc J. Spears reported that he's heard rumors about a potential sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Clippers for Blake Griffin.

Griffin was drafted by former Clippers' GM Neil Olshey, who is now with the Blazers.

Griffin has an early termination option in 2017.

"This is a rumor. Let me say that three times. This is a rumor. This a rumor. This is a rumor," said Spears on John Canzano's radio show.

"Blake Griffin.

"Obviously, there’s a connection there with the GM. And you wonder, if LaMarcus is interested in the Clippers, playing with Chris Paul. Could Neil Olshey get his old superstar with the Clippers in Portland?

"I think you get to a point where – Neil is smart. You’ve got to have a come-to-Jesus meeting with LaMarcus and say, “Hey, do you really want to be here or do you think you want to go. Because if you really want to go, help us – the same way Steve Nash helped the Suns. Don’t just walk away. Try to help out Portland in the process."

Nets Prioritizing Re-Signing Brook Lopez, Thaddeus Young In Offseason

May 6, 2015 11:19 AM

Billy King says the Brooklyn Nets will "explore all options" this offseason while not ruling out a trade. The Nets' first priority, however, will be improving internally and to re-sign Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young.

King says the Nets' long-term plan is to build around Lopez and Young.

Deron Williams and Joe Johnson remain under contract for 15-16.

"Will there be a trade? There could be," said King.

King also said that the Nets could have traded multiple large contracts at the deadline.
