Doc Rivers Hopes Blake Griffin Ends Career With Clippers

Jul 28, 2016 11:34 AM

Doc Rivers was asked about trade rumors involving Blake Griffin and his future with the Los Angeles Clippers.

"One, I'm glad you asked the question," said Rivers. "It's funny, you don't want to go out and send out a press release every time there's a rumor about Blake. We're hoping Blake ends his career playing for the Clippers. Period. So when teams call, we say we have no interest.

"First of all, no team is calling right now because teams know we don't have any interest. It just tells you the different times, you know. Things have changed. Everyone believes that they're media now. I feel for guys like you. There's so many good credible guys and there's some of the guys that are bloggers that have nothing to do with the sport. I had my young son trace where this started, the Blake rumor to Boston.

"Danny and I have talked twice this summer. One was about the British Open and one was about another golf tournament. That's about it. But my son traced it to a Boston radio talk show and the guy didn't say that we had been talking, he said Blake was one of the guys that Boston should go after. That started the next step to the next step. That stuff is tough."

Griffin and Chris Paul will be free agents in 2017 and Rivers was asked about his confidence in keeping the Clippers' core together.

"Well, I'm confident, probably the same way they're going to be able to keep their guys," said Rivers. "I do think we have an attractive place. We have a new owner. It would be interesting if Steve Ballmer wasn't the owner, I don't know how confident I would be. With Steve, I'm extremely confident that we can keep both. You know, listen, winning is the key. The better we play on the floor, the better chance we have of not only keeping those guys but actually adding to our basketball team. That's always the key factor in this. Quality of life is important, being comfortable, players getting along with the staff and each other. All that goes into it. But I think we're in a good place there. I know both of them have said they want to play here. They want to play for us forever.

"Your job never stops. You never relax. You never take a player for granted."

Rudy Gay Denies Asking For Trade, Has No Idea On Direction Of Kings' Franchise

Jul 27, 2016 12:39 PM

Rudy Gay was asked about how he's handling reports the Sacramento Kings are looking to trade him this offseason.

"I mean it's been pretty loud as of late so it's hard not to pay attention to it," said Gay. "I think it just goes to, I don't know, I think there's always ways to do things and in this situation I don't think it's going about the right way. No matter what your intentions to do with your players, I would think the first thing you want to do is make sure people are happy with what you are doing. That hasn't been the case."

Gay hasn't had much communication with the franchise.

"No, I haven't. I've had communication, but not the kind of communication that I would say I like," Gay said.

Gay elaborated on hearing things through media reports instead of direct communication.

"You don't want to hear things on the internet, on Twitter. You would like to hear it from out of the horse's mouth. Just be upfront with people, that's all you have to do," Gay said.

Gay also denied that he's asked for a trade.

"No. I think people saw my disinterest, not disinterest, but I think people saw what went on this season and kind of went on that to say that I asked for a trade. I still feel like I had a lot more to give ... because of the structure of the team I wasn't able to give everything."

Gay also has no idea what the direction of the franchise is right now as they move into a new arena.

"I have no idea. I suit up and give it my all. That's all I can do in this situation, that's all you can do. Go out there and play as much as you can. Obviously, we don't have anything to really build on. We have a new coach. I think that's the only thing we can really build on. New coach and seeing how it plays out."

Magic In No Rush To Pursue Trade Of Nikola Vucevic

Jul 26, 2016 2:09 PM

The Orlando Magic are in no rush to pursue a trade of Nikola Vucevic.

The Magic traded for Serge Ibaka while also signing Bismack Biyombo in free agency to create a logjam at the big positions.

Rob Hennigan, the team's GM, called Vucevic shortly after the Biyombo signing to reassure him, but also declined to promise Vucevic he would remain the starter, the two men say.

Orlando has concerns that they may have a potential playmaking void that Vucevic could help alleviate. Vucevic is a quality post player and passer. Vucevic assisted on 16 percent of Orlando's baskets while on the floor last season.

With Vucevic, Ibaka and Biyombo combining for approximately 80 minutes per game, they would have 16 minutes for small ball with Aaron Gordon at power forward.

Russell Westbrook 'Controls His Destiny' One Year Before Free Agency

Jul 18, 2016 2:22 PM

The Oklahoma City Thunder haven't given up on the possibility of Russell Westbrook agreeing upon a renegotiated contract that includes an extension.

Westbrook could sign for an additional two seasons and $73.5 million by waiting until the 2017 offseason when he becomes a free agent.

"OKC is still trying to get Russell Westbrook to sign a contract extension," the source explained, "which he won't do because extensions at this time aren't in a player's best interest anymore. He won't do it."

The issue with the Thunder trading Westbrook is the uncertainty of that team signing him long-term.

"No team is going to pay a hefty price without getting a commitment from Westbrook," the source said. "Someone may pay a cheaper price without a commitment, but OKC probably doesn't do a deal like that."

There is nothing imminent at this point.

"Russ is in control of the situation. Not any team," the source said. "He controls his destiny. But if a team is going to get him, they need a long-term commitment."

Wolves Unlikely To Trade Ricky Rubio

Jul 18, 2016 11:41 AM

The Minnesota Timberwolves are unlikely to trade away Ricky Rubio.

Speculation about the future of Rubio has been heightened since they drafted Kris Dunn with the fifth overall pick.

“I don’t see that as a likely possibility,” owner Glen Taylor said about a Rubio trade. “I just think the coach, everybody, likes Ricky. I think we want him to come in and improve on his shooting. But his other things, he plays defense, he gets assists, he helps the others get better. He has some wonderful qualities.

“I think the coach wants to bring an assistant coach to help Ricky on his shooting and I think that’s where we’re going to start out and go and we’ll see how good Kris Dunn is.”

Rubio has three seasons remaining on his contract with Minnesota.

The Timberwolves hired Tom Thibodeau as their head coach in April and Taylor believes they will help Rubio with his shooting

"I think the coach wants to bring an assistant coach to help Ricky on his shooting and I think that's where we're going to start out and go and we'll see how good Kris Dunn is," Taylor said.

Russell Westbrook Has Given Thunder No Indication He Would Like Trade

Jul 18, 2016 11:07 AM

Russell Westbrook has given the Oklahoma City Thunder no indication he currently would like a trade or plans on leaving in free agency in 2017.

One source described Westbrook as "ticked off" about Kevin Durant's decision to leave in free agency and is eager for the season to start as it will present a new challenge.

"He's ready," said the source.

Westbrook can sign an extension with the Thunder that raises his salary for the 16-17 season but he's unlikely to do so.
