Serge Ibaka Progresses Rapidly, Upgraded To Day-To-Day

May 23, 2014 12:54 PM

Serge Ibaka has made significant progress in his return from his calf injury and has been upgraded to day-to-day.

The Oklahoma City Thunder had previously ruled out Ibaka for the remainder of the postseason.

The San Antonio Spurs have raced out to a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals with the absence of Ibaka being dully felt.

Ibaka is one of the best defensive big men in the NBA and his ability to stretch the floor has also limited the Thunder on offense without him.

Paul George Diagnosed With Concussion

May 21, 2014 2:51 PM

The Indiana Pacers have provided an update to Paul George's status in the Eastern Conference Finals, issuing the following statement:

Tuesday night, Indiana Pacers forward Paul George took a knee to the back of his head during the fourth quarter of the Eastern Conference Finals game against Miami. Immediately after the play, George exhibited no symptoms of a concussion and, in response to questions from the Pacers’ medical staff, he denied dizziness, nausea, and issues with his vision.  He was also active and aware of his surroundings.  As a result, the Indiana medical staff did not suspect a concussion.

Following the game, George stated for the first time that he “blacked out” on the play. As a result of this statement, the team conducted the NBA-mandated concussion assessment, which did not reveal any active symptoms of concussion.

Because of the statement and Indiana’s ongoing evaluation and management of potential concussions, George underwent further testing and evaluation Wednesday morning. He has been diagnosed by the team’s consulting neurologist with a concussion, based on his post-game reporting that he had briefly lost consciousness during the game. He will begin the NBA-mandated protocol for return-to-participation after a diagnosed concussion.

Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, Director of the NBA Concussion Program, has been in contact with the team medical staff and stated, “The Indiana Pacers medical team followed the NBA concussion protocol and there was no indication of concussion during the game.  This case illustrates that concussion evaluation is an ongoing process and manifestations of the injury may not always present immediately.”

Paul George 'Blacked Out' After Colliding With Wade

May 21, 2014 1:57 AM

Paul George briefly "blacked out" after his collision with Dwyane Wade in the fourth quarter of Game 2.

George dove to the court to chase a loose ball and Wade fell over the top of him. Wade's left knee and right leg made contact with the back of George's head.

Both players remained in the game after laying on the court for several moments.

“I blacked out as soon as it happened and then … however much time was remaining, I was just blurry,” said George.

Serge Ibaka Retains Hope Of Returning If Thunder Advance

May 20, 2014 10:54 AM

The Oklahoma City Thunder have ruled out Serge Ibaka for the remainder of the postseason with a lower leg injury, but he still hopes to work toward a return.

Ibaka has a willingness to play with pain and is thinking about beginning some stationary shooting late this week.

"He's not coming through those doors. … He's not coming back," said Scott Brooks after Game 1.

Ibaka wouldn't be able to return for the Western Conference Finals, but nobody has talked him out of hoping to return for the NBA Finals if the Thunder advance.

The Thunder believed this injury would be a one-to-two-month recovery period.

Exec: Joel Embiid's Only Issue Is His Medical Status

May 19, 2014 1:05 PM

Joel Embiid suffered a back injury late in his freshman season at Kansas and did not attend the NBA Draft combine in Chicago last week.

NBA teams do not have the medical reports of Embiid heading into Tuesday's draft lottery.

"The No. 1 issue is going to be the medical issue with him," a Central Division executive said. "There's no other issues really to deal with. With him not having taken the physical in Chicago, he's difficult to project. I don't see him falling out of the top three unless there's a medical red flag."

Embiid remains expected to be a high draft choice and gives personnel around the league confidence that he will contribute from day one.

"He could play tonight and be effective," a Northwest Division general manager said. "You cannot teach that reaction time, knowing when to block a shot, to go from help defense to getting back to your man, show and recover. It has to be natural because he hasn't been playing. basketball long enough for people to teach him that. Imagine when he is taught, with people who have that knowledge. He gives you the first move and then he gives you the countermove. Young guys don't do that. They give you the countermove and you say, 'You could have gone baseline before you went to the middle.'
