Sun Mingming Hopes To Become Yao Ming Part II

May 30, 2005 9:25 PM

Sun Mingming, who is two inches taller than Yao, has attended a training camp in the United States and hopes to be picked in the NBA draft next month, the South China Morning Post reported Sunday.

If the 22-year-old Sun is signed by an NBA team, he would become the tallest player in league history.

Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol, at 7-foot-7, are the tallest players in NBA history.

Former NBA player Keith Gatlin, a coach who has worked with Sun, told the newspaper that the Chinese prospect is a 70 percent shooter but needs to work on his agility.

"He really doesn't get much lift and that's something we're looking at to improve," Gatlin said.

Still, Gatlin noted Sun's height means "he pretty much only needs to stand with his arms up in front of the net and he's blocking the basket."

Spencer Haywood Supports The Raising Of The Age Barrier

May 15, 2005 1:21 PM

The man that started it all is now taking the opposite stance with reagards to underclassmen entering the draft.  An accourace that is becoming all to normal these days.

Spencer Haywood successfully sued the NBA more than three decades ago in a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, paving the way for teenagers to enter the draft.

?I would say (union director) Billy Hunter made a smart move if he did indeed raise it,? Haywood said Friday. ?He would give the fans what they really want, an age requirement. It would give players time to mature, and it also protects his veteran constituents.?

Slaughter Gets Insurance Policy If He Returns To SDSU

May 12, 2005 1:36 PM

San Diego State forward Marcus Slaughter has been granted a $1 million disability policy under the NCAA Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance Program.

The policy with Hartford Life Insurance Co. guards against any serious injury that might affect Slaughter's future earnings. According to the NCAA, only basketball players who have demonstrated professional potential and are projected to be a future first-round NBA draft pick are eligible to participate in the program.

Slaughter, who has two seasons of college eligibility remaining, has applied for June's NBA Draft. He's expecting that he'll receive an invitation to next month's prestigious NBA predraft camp in Chicago.

The $6,000 premium is paid for by the NCAA. Slaughter would be required to reimburse the NCAA if he signs an NBA contract.

"They did their research and saw that he'll be a first-round draft pick either this year or next year," said Dwight Slaughter, Marcus' father.
