Oden Paired With Russell In Marketing Deal With Topps

May 30, 2007 4:27 AM

Greg Oden has been drafted by a trading card company, and will be on the same team as Bill Russell.

Oden, a possible No. 1 draft pick after leaving Ohio State following his freshman year, signed a three-year contract worth at least $3 million Tuesday to become a spokesman for Topps Co. His first deal? A card featuring him and Russell, the Boston Celtics Hall of Famer, on the 50th anniversary of the company's first basketball set.

Like Russell, Oden is known for his ability to dominate a game on the defensive end with his rebounding and shot blocking.

"Certainly there's been a lot of comparisons to Bill Russell, which we don't run away from," said Bill Sanders, a vice president for BDA Sports Management, which represents Oden.

"I think that Greg has got a lot of that in him, but he's also got other skills in him that people don't necessarily associate with Bill Russell. Certainly he's honored to be mentioned in that kind of company. I think one of his goals is to accomplish a little bit of what Bill Russell did."

Kansas' Rush Tears ACL

May 29, 2007 1:39 AM

Kansas guard Brandon Rush tore his ACL in his right knee, meaning he may not play for the Jayhawks until December, a high-ranking Kansas source told ESPN.com Monday night.

The school expects to see a final review of Rush's MRI Tuesday. The test results were sent to a Denver specialist over the weekend. An announcement is due Tuesday or early Wednesday from the school.

Rush injured his ACL Thursday during a pickup game and then withdrew from the NBA draft Friday afternoon.

Prospects Skipping Out On NBA Predraft Camp

May 28, 2007 3:53 PM

No one was ever under the impression Greg Oden or Kevin Durant would play at this week's predraft camp. But fringe prospects like Wilson Chandler, Derrick Byars and DeVon Hardin skipping out, too?

Those looking for more marquee names when the camp opens Tuesday may still find players like Pitt's Aaron Gray and Boston College's Jared Dudley, but the turnout is clearly not what the league was looking for when it made a rule change this season prohibiting private team workouts before the start of the camp.

The purpose of the change was to convince players like Chandler, Byars and Hardin - and, quite frankly, players of a higher caliber than them - to join the field in search of guaranteed first-round money or a second-round shot.

However, with the draft still over a month away, many agents feel their clients can either do enough impressing in postcamp private workouts or will be able to rely on their collegiate resumes in lieu of facing the Orlando competition.

Tech's Point Guard Crittenton Will Stay In Draft

May 26, 2007 1:58 PM

Georgia Tech point guard Javaris Crittenton says a lack of depth at the point guard position in the NBA draft reinforced his decision to turn pro after one season with the Yellow Jackets.

Crittenton said Friday he is interviewing agents.

"I'm just feeling like I'm prepared to play in the NBA right now, and looking at the number of point guards in the draft, I feel this is the right time," Crittenton said.

Brandon Rush Withdraws From NBA Draft

May 25, 2007 5:55 PM

Brandon Rush, who led Kansas in scoring last year, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will play his junior season at the school.

A two-time all-conference selection, the 6-foot-6 Rush averaged a team-high 13.8 points for the Big 12 champions.

Sophomore Julian Wright, another starter, has committed to the draft. But with Rush returning, Kansas will have all but one of the 14 players who went 33-5 and captured the Jayhawks' third straight conference title.

Rush was projected to be a second round pick by RealGM.com.

Oden In Portland Talking Shoes

May 25, 2007 6:09 AM

Greg Oden's welcome-to-Portland moment came at 10,000 feet, when the man sitting next to him on an airplane opened his window shade.

"He opened it up and I saw a mountain with snow on it," Oden said, referring to a view of Mount Hood. "I've never seen that, until now."

Oden, one of the most sought-after college players to enter the NBA draft, stands a good chance of seeing more of Mount Hood if the Portland Trail Blazers do what many expect: Select the 7-footer with the first overall pick in the June 28 draft.

It had been less than 24 hours since the Blazers, and Oden, learned that Portland won the draft lottery for the right to pick first; but already, Oden found himself in Portland.

Long before the draft lottery results were announced Tuesday, Oden had agreed to fly to Portland to spend two days meeting with Nike representatives about a possible shoe contract.

Oden said the coincidence of his Portland visit the day after the Blazers won the lottery hadn't struck him yet, even as people at the airport snapped photos of him with their cellphones. One man went as far as to shout, "Greg, you are in the right place!"

"I haven't thought about it, to be honest," Oden said, his voice soft and his smile easy. "The lottery happened yesterday, so it's been crazy. I'm still like, 'Wow.' "

Stuckey To Remain In Draft

May 23, 2007 9:19 PM

Rodney Stuckey has signed with Goodwin Sports Management of Seattle, a move that prevents him from returning to college if he is not drafted by an NBA team.

"It's tough to lose Rodney, but it is such a phenomenal opportunity for him," EWU coach Mike Burns said. "For us to have one of ours in the NBA is spectacular."

Stuckey is predicted to be drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the 15th overall selection in RealGM's most recent Mock Draft.

Hibbert To Stay At Georgetown, Green To Stay In Draft

May 23, 2007 6:09 PM

Georgetown junior forward Jeff Green is staying in the NBA draft, but his teammate Roy Hibbert will remain with the Hoyas for his senior season.

"Just sitting down with my family and coach, I feel like we came to a decision that I should stay in this draft, and it would be the best thing for me after the season that the team had and that I had," Green said at a news conference held in the lobby of McDonough Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

"I thought about it and said to myself, 'Do I really want to stay in the draft and sit on the bench?'" said Hibbert, who was also projected to be a lottery pick. "My heart was here."

Report: Hoyas' Hibbert Will Pull Out Of NBA Draft

May 23, 2007 7:09 AM

Georgetown juniors Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert are scheduled to announce their decisions on if they will pull out of the June 28 NBA Draft at a noon news conference today.

A source though says Hibbert, who is a projected lottery pick, will return for his senior season.

Hibbert has said his odds were 50-50 on returning to the team due to the stockpile of big men in this draft.

"Do I want to go eight through 14, or do I want to go top three next year?" Hibbert said in April.

"That does play a factor in my decision. . . . I wouldn't want to be at the end of a bench on an NBA team, not being able to develop and show what I can do, so another year here would be great, obviously.

There is no word though on the potential lottery pick guard Jeff Green but he has said in the past that there was a 70 percent chance he would return to the Hoyas next season.

Green, Hibbert To Make Draft Decision Soon

May 23, 2007 7:06 AM

Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert, who led Georgetown to its first Final Four since the 1980s, will announce Wednesday whether they will keep their names in the NBA draft.

The two juniors submitted their names as early entry draft candidates last month. At the time, Green said there was a "70-30" chance he would return for his senior season, while Hibbert said he was "50-50."

Both players had said they would play four years for Georgetown, and the Hoyas would be one of the preseason favorites to win the national championship if both return.

However, both could be influenced by mock drafts that have both projected as possible top 10 picks. They had said that their value in this year's draft -- as compared to their possible value next year -- would be a strong factor in whether they turn pro.
