Jerry Colangelo Working On Plan In Case Krzyzewski Can't Coach In 2016 Olympics

Feb 18, 2016 11:15 AM

Jerry Colangelo is considering contingency plans in case Mike Krzyzewski is unable to coach the United States in the Olympics this August for health reasons.

Gregg Popovich has already been announced as Krzyzewski's successor after the 2016 Olympics.

Krzyzewski recently spent two days in the heart wing of a Durham hospital.

"I'm always concerned about people I love, and I love Coach K," Colangelo told NBA TV. "You've heard my expression, 'We're joined at the hip and have been ever since we joined together back in '05.' I am concerned about his health. I told him on the phone (recently) nothing is more important than his health. Not Duke basketball. Not USA Basketball. I hope and I pray that he can take care of his situations, whatever they may be, and that he's healthy and ready to go."

"We're not at that stage at all," said Colangelo. "I do know that his intention is the day after his Duke season is over is to have his knee replaced. It's killing him right now. But that's just one facet of his health circumstances. We'll cross that bridge. Certainly in the back of my mind I'm thinking about what ifs. But it would be, I think, inappropriate and out of place to even discuss it."

Pressed if he has a plan in mind if Krzyzewski cannot coach in Rio, Colangelo said: "I think so. But, again, I think it's too early to get into that. As we get closer and it appears that there's a prospect that he may not be able to or chooses not to, that's a whole different story. But let's not be premature on that."

Damian Lillard Added To USA Basketball Roster Pool

Feb 10, 2016 5:16 PM

Damian Lillard has been added to the roster of finalists for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Team.

Named to the 2014-16 USA Basketball Men's National Team in January 2014, the 6-foot-3 guard was a finalist for the 2014 USA World Cup Team, and played in two exhibition games during the 2014 USA National Team Tour, recording seven points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal in 24 minutes of action in the USA's 105-62 win against Dominican Republic on Aug. 20, 2014.

Currently in his fourth NBA season, Lillard in 2015-16 is averaging career-highs of 24.2 points (6th in the NBA) and 7.3 assists per game (7th in the NBA), while adding 4.4 rebounds per game, and shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from 3-point and 86.5 percent from the foul line.

"I recently received a call from Damian, and during our conversation he expressed his desire to be considered for the U.S. Olympic Team and to remain involved with the USA National Team in the future as well," said Jerry Colangelo, who has served as the managing director of the USA Men's National Team since 2005. "Both Mike (Krzyzewski) and I feel like Damian is playing at a very high level and that he should be added to our list of Olympic finalists. Damian has been a member of the USA National Team since 2014, and he participated in National Team training camps in 2013 and 2014, so he does have equity in USA Basketball, which is always important to me."

Tony Parker will participate in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Manila this summer with France.

Parker's wife is pregnant and there was a possibility he wouldn't play to be with her during her delivery.

"Yes, I’ll be there for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and I will be in the Olympic Games if we qualify. I want to play for France.”

“I’ve had many discussions with Axelle (his wife) and we agreed. We had to make the decision for us both. She knows how important it is for me. We evaluated all the situations and I’ve made my decision.”
