Wiggins Expected To Soon Decide On Reclassification

Sep 18, 2012 11:41 PM

Andrew Wiggins, considered to be the No. 1 player in high school basketball, will soon decide whether to reclassify into 2013.

“I think his parents are going to try and come down in the next couple weeks and they have to make that decision,” Huntington (West Va.) coach Rob Fulford said. “Andrew’s really at this point, he doesn’t want to make any decisions without his parents, which is obviously a smart move on his part. He just has to get in front of his parents and they need to have a conversation to get that process started on exactly what it’s going to be.”

Wiggins already has most of the core classes he needs to qualify for NCAA standards, Fulford told USA TODAY.

"He has eight classes a day, and there's not a lot of fluff classes," Fulford said. "He has one art class, but the rest are are core classes. He could reclassify, but it's easier if he decides one way or the other now so we can concentrate on the season."

Huntington Prep Coach: Wiggins Could Start For NBA Team

Sep 16, 2012 12:08 PM

Andrew Wiggins' coach at Huntington Prep, Rob Fulford, believes Wiggins “could start for an NBA team tomorrow.”

The 6-foot-8, 195-pound Wiggins has been heralded as a once-in-a-generation player since his sophomore year.

“There is no question college is a waste of time for him,” Fulford said.

Wiggins may reclassify from 2014 to 2013, which would allow him to enter the NBA draft a year earlier than expected.

“Selfishly for us, if we’ve got him here for another year that’s better for us, but that’s not what’s best for him,” Fulford said.

Adonis Thomas Puts On Thirty Pounds

Sep 10, 2012 9:37 AM

Adonis Thomas, projected by some as a lottery choice in the 2013 NBA draft, has gained thirty pounds since the start of last season.

The 6-foot-7 forward, who is expected to play the majority of his minutes on the wing, went from 222 pounds to 252.

Josh Pastner downplayed any concern about Thomas' weight, adding he expects him to be somewhere in the 235-238 range by the time the season begins.

"I think he looks good," Pastner said. "He's gonna be just fine."

Calipari 'Comfortable' Noel Will Be Ruled Eligible To Play For Kentucky

Sep 7, 2012 9:34 AM

John Calipari seemed optimistic when asked about the NCAA’s ongoing inquiry into Nerlens Noel’s amateur status.

"We feel comfortable," Calipari said. "It's a review that those kinds of players go through. When you reclassify, you're going to have reviews. When you reclassify and some people are mad you reclassified, there are going to be some reviews. That's how it is. We're comfortable that he's done everything he was supposed to do."

The NCAA’s investigation is focused on how Noel paid for unofficial visits, which included trips to Louisville, Kentucky and multiple trips to Syracuse.

Crean: Zeller Pacing Hoosiers In Offseason Improvement

Sep 7, 2012 9:30 AM

Cody Zeller has led Indiana in offseason improvement.

The 7-foot sophomore has elevated his ability to operate against different defensive schemes.

“We had to get to a point this offseason where, no matter what [the opponents] do in their office, that he can go above and beyond that,” Hoosiers coach Tom Crean said. “He’s so secure in his fundamentals and so good at reading what’s going to happen that he takes his game to another level.”

Crean said the coaching staff is trying to get Zeller to be able to get from one end of the court to the other in two dribbles. Right now, it’s at three.

“Is he ever going to need that? He probably won’t,” Crean said. “But he needs that mindset.”

Dexter Strickland Returns To Court For First Time Since Tearing ACL

Sep 5, 2012 8:27 PM

Dexter Strickland played pickup with his North Carolina teammates on Monday, marking the first time he has played basketball since tearing his ACL last January.

"Running up and down the court was different," Strickland said. "I still have a little limp because of just that mental hesitation. I'm still cautious about what I do and how I do it. I'm not sure yet how much weight I can put on my knee or how fast I can cut."

Strickland is expected to compete with freshman Marcus Paige for the starting point guard job with the Tar Heels.
