Brett Brown Appears To Prefer Ben Simmons With Top Pick

May 31, 2016 3:02 AM

Brett Brown has a history with the Simmons family, having coached Ben's father, David Simmons, for four years in Australia, beginning in 1989.

Brown was coaching David when Ben was born and has maintained a relationship with the family.

Brown mentioned several top prospects by name when posed with questions but referred to Simmons as "him."

"Think of just, and we've talked about, the unusual circumstance to end up where I have personally ended up with the history that I've had with the family and the coaches that have coached him," Brown said of Simmons. "I know very, very closely the people that have worked with him across the board. That's just one of the benefits of living in the country and 20 minutes from where he grew up, for 17 years. I get hit all over the place, just like I would with Brandon, just like I would with Kris Dunn or Buddy Hield. I'm not young anymore so I have friends all over the world who coach and have high opinions of different people and I listen to them. I enjoy the conversation. I like taking that stuff in."

Isaiah Briscoe Returning To Kentucky, Marcus Lee Transferring

May 25, 2016 3:03 PM

Isaiah Briscoe announced he will return to Kentucky for his sophomore season, and junior Marcus Lee has decided to transfer after also withdrawing from the NBA draft.

Briscoe was not invited to the combine after making just five of his 37 three-point attempts.

"I really grew from this experience and I appreciate the opportunity to be evaluated by these NBA teams," Briscoe said in a statement released by the university on Wednesday. "I also want to thank the coaching staff and the fans for their support during this time. The NBA is my ultimate goal, so I'm returning to build on last year. There's no better place to grow as a player or to win a championship, and I want to do both."

Briscoe likely would have been a late second rounder or gone undrafted.

Lee, who averaged 6.4 points and 6.0 rebounds along with 59 blocks, told the school that he wants to be closer to his family, John Calipari said. Lee is from Antioch, California outside of San Francisco.

76ers To Expand Workouts For No. 1 Pick Beyond Simmons, Ingram

May 23, 2016 11:22 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers will work out multiple prospects as they consider their options with the first overall pick.

The 76ers are widely expected to pick between Brandon Ingram and Ben Simmons, but they expect to also work out Jaylen Brown, Kris Dunn and Jamal Murray.

Philadelphia is also considering offering invitations to Buddy Hield and Dragan Bender.

League Office Reviewing Draft Combine Measurements

May 21, 2016 12:19 PM

The NBA league office is reviewing the measurements from this year's draft combine.

There were several players who had significantly different results in their standing reach than previous times they were tested.

For example, Jaylen Brown's standing reach was three inches shorter than it was at the Nike Hoop Summit a year ago.

“Please note that there were variances with the standing reach measurements for several players in comparison to prior recorded measurements. As a result, the unofficial anthropometric measurements and strength and agility testing results (currently available on nba.com) are under review. The official measurements and testing results will be released as soon as the internal review is complete.”

Scout: Dragan Bender More Advanced At 18 Than Porzingis

May 20, 2016 11:52 AM

Dragan Bender probably has the best shot of pulling a draft upset and being selected ahead of either Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram.

Bender has a recent small sample size with Maccabi Tel Aviv, but he's younger than most freshman and has been playing against players more than a decade older than him.

"Dragan is more advanced at his age than Kristaps Porzingis was when he was 18," a longtime NBA scout said. "Dragan has great length, and he can block shots. He can run the floor, and his ability to finish at the rim is exceptional. His shot is getting better all the time. On defense, he has the ability to guard the 4 or the 5. He needs to gain weight and strength, but his potential is jaw-dropping."

"Top players from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina play basketball to express beauty," said Maurizio Balducci, Bender's Italy-based agent, who is also watching the practice. "This is how [the late] Drazen Petrovic played and Toni Kukoc played. Dragan is very much from this culture. And dunking in a layup line when you are 7'1" is not an expression of beauty."

Jaylen Brown Won't Hire Agent, Will Use NBPA To Advise Him On Rookie Deal

May 19, 2016 1:49 PM

Jaylen Brown has decided not to sign with an agent as he continues through the draft process.

Brown will use the NBPA to advise him on his rookie deal.

Teams are limited on what they can sign rookies for due to the rookie scale.

Brown is widely expected to be one of the top picks in the 2016 NBA Draft after one season at California.

76ers Leaning Toward Selecting Ben Simmons First Overall

May 18, 2016 11:39 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers are leaning heavily toward selecting Ben Simmons with the first overall pick.

The 76ers will continue to consider Brandon Ingram but they have confidence in the upside of Simmons.

Simmons was born and raised in Australia, where 76ers director of performance research and development David T. Martin was an iconic sports-science leader until leaving the Australian Institute of Sport for Philadelphia in 2015.

Brett Brown also coached Simmons’ father, Dave, with the Melbourne Tigers.

NBA May Revisit Lottery Reform Following Free Agency

May 18, 2016 11:20 AM

Adam Silver says the NBA will not consider making changes again to the lottery system at this time.

There was strong support of removing the incentives for having a bad record but the plan didn't receive a super majority.

The NBA, however, could readdress it later in the summer.

"I was in favor of changing the lottery," Silver told reporters after the drawing. "But we've parked the issue. We've said, 'Once we get through this summer of free agency, let's return to it and see if a modification is necessary.'"

76ers Also Were Initially Drawn For Second Overall Pick

May 18, 2016 11:17 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers won the 2016 NBA Draft Lottery and their number also came up when they drew the second overall pick.

The 76ers had the best odds in history to get the top overall pick due to their place with the worst record in the league and also owning a pick swap with the Sacramento Kings.

Sam Hinkie stepped down as general manager of the 76ers in April but he has positioned the franchise to rebuild with a considerable number of valuable future draft picks.

In next year's draft, the 76ers will have their own pick and also the Lakers' (top-3 protected).

"It's unfortunate that Sam isn't here to be a part of this," Bryan Colangelo said. "But it was his choice."
