Michele Roberts: NBA Has Dearth Of Coaches, GM Of Color

May 23, 2016 1:14 PM

Michele Roberts was interviewed by The Undefeated and told a story of how she received an insulting job inquiry from a prominent lawyer.

"This gentleman, I use that word, called me and he was clearly inquiring about a position," said Roberts. "I suppose with a straight face said to me 'if you want to be taken seriously in the New York sports market you're going to need to hire somebody like me. I'm white, I'm male and I'm a Jew, and I will give you credibility, and I will guide you through this whole process.'

"I think I'm pleased he was not in my office because I swear for god I'm sure would have I slapped the piss out of him."

Roberts also talked about how there needs to be more women in sports, as well as people of color in the NBA's management positions.

"There clearly is a dearth in the number of coaches of color, GMs of color, and frankly owners of color. We can't pretend there's not work to be done. Again, I concede the numbers have gotten better. I don't know why they can't get even better."

NBA May Revisit Lottery Reform Following Free Agency

May 18, 2016 11:20 AM

Adam Silver says the NBA will not consider making changes again to the lottery system at this time.

There was strong support of removing the incentives for having a bad record but the plan didn't receive a super majority.

The NBA, however, could readdress it later in the summer.

"I was in favor of changing the lottery," Silver told reporters after the drawing. "But we've parked the issue. We've said, 'Once we get through this summer of free agency, let's return to it and see if a modification is necessary.'"

76ers Sell Jersey Ad Space To Stubhub On Three-Year, $15M Deal

May 16, 2016 10:24 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers have sold ad space on their jerseys to Stubhub on a three-year deal at $5 million per season.

The 76ers are the first NBA team to have an advertiser in place ahead of the 17-18 season when the program begins.

"We are about being first, being different, being innovative and getting to market at quickly as we can," 76ers CEO Scott O'Neil said. "We're thrilled that the NBA has decided to be an innovator among the major sports leagues in this country, we're happy that we will be the beneficiaries, and we know that being first here will drive value for our partner."

NBA teams will keep half of the money generated by selling sponsorships with the other half going into a split pool.

Sports Channels Comprise 20 Percent Of Typical Cable Bill

May 13, 2016 1:55 PM

Approximately 20 percent of a typical cable bill in the United States goes to sports channels, which pay teams and leagues for the right to show their games.

Sports therefore are receiving a large subsidy from cable customers who don't watch them.

Cable is going towards disaggregation, which means sports like everything else will be worth what the actual audience is willing to pay for them.

The North American sports business is valued at half a trillion dollars. Annual revenue from ticket sales, broadcast rights, merchandise, and other sources is about $61 billion.
