Nuggets Weighing Roster Options, Could Consider Bringing Back Andre Miller

Jan 30, 2014 9:50 PM

The Denver Nuggets are weighing roster options due to injuries to Ty Lawson and Nate Robinson.

Brian Shaw said the Nuggets are considering all options, including bringing back Andre Miller, who has been away from the team since a Jan. 1 incident with Shaw.

Shaw added he still has not spoken with Miller since the two exchanged words during a game.

Shaw has stated he is willing to coach any player who buys into the Nuggets' system and accepts his role.

Clippers Pleased By Instant Impact Made By Turkoglu

Jan 30, 2014 11:14 AM

Hedo Turkoglu is averaging just 2.7 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in 12 minutes, but has made an instant impact for Doc Rivers and the Los Angeles clippers.

“He’s been great,” Rivers said. “I was surprised in the first game (about) his ball-handling. Usually, when you miss the amount of games he missed, that’s the last thing that comes around because of the speed of the game and all that.”

Turkolgu is also bring intangibles to the Clippers as a veteran presence.

“The first game that he dressed, (DeAndre Jordan) came out and lost his mind over some play and before I got to him, Hedo ran out on the floor and grabbed him, told him he was wrong and let’s move on,” Rivers said. “I looked at them, and that’s a stranger talking to him right now.

“They listen because they know he’s been around. It’s easy for players to listen to each other when they have the right thing at heart. I think that makes a good team.”

Kyle Lowry Hears MVP Chants From Air Canada Centre Crowd

Jan 30, 2014 11:10 AM

Kyle Lowry had 33 points and 11 assists in the Toronto Raptors' 98-83 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.

Lowry received "MVP" chants from the Air Canada Centre crowd.

Lowry has a strong All-Star candidacy, but is not certain to be voted in.

“I keep my fingers crossed that the coaches voted him in because he deserves it,” said Dwane Casey. “Right now he’s one of the best point guards in the league.”

Brooks Finally Uses Small Lineup To Stop Losing Streak Against Heat

Jan 30, 2014 10:58 AM

Scott Brooks used a small lineup after the Oklahoma City Thunder fell behind 22-4 in the first six minutes of Wednesday's over the Miami Heat.

Brooks used Perry Jones III instead of Kendrick Perkins to match up better with the athleticism of the Heat.

“I thought to win this game that we had to make a decision to go with a smaller lineup,” Brooks explained. “It’s just this game. It’s not something that we have to do all the time.”

Brooks has often received criticism for not playing against matchups.

“It’s a better matchup, I guess,” Kevin Durant said. “Perry came in and did a great job of just giving us that length on defense and being aggressive on the offensive end…It’s going to be games where guys are going to play more minutes and games where guys are going to have to sacrifice a little bit. And that’s what we did. Guys sacrificed in that second half…and we got a good win.”

The Heat had won six straight games against the Thunder.

Chris Grant: Cavaliers' Season Frustrating, Effort Level 'Not Acceptable'

Jan 30, 2014 1:30 AM

Chris Grant addressed the Cleveland Cavaliers' disappointing season on Wednesday, with a 16-29 record and an 11-12 mark on their home court.

"We're all accountable for it, including myself," Grant said. "It's frustrating. It's disappointing to our fans. The fans deserve better."

"The lack of effort is just not acceptable. It's not who were are or who we want to be.''

The Cavaliers went 1-4 in their recent home stand. Grant understands Dan Gilbert wants to win but believes the Cavaliers' owner is supportive of the front office and team.

"Dan wants to win,'' Grant said. "He's passionate. People know that. I've said this before: There's a great combination of Dan Gilbert and the fans of Northeast Ohio. It's just a special combination.

"He wants to win. He's supportive. He understands. He's very involved -- as far as asking questions and debating and talking -- but in the right way, what we all would expect him to [be]. He's been great, but at the same time, yeah, he wants us to win, as do we.''

Stevens Had Sit-Down Meeting With Sullinger

Jan 29, 2014 11:35 PM

Jared Sullinger starred with 24 points and 17 rebounds in the Boston Celtics’ last-second loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night, but he had been in a mini-slump as of late.

Sullinger, who was selected for the Rising Stars Challenge earlier on Wednesday, had a combined 16 points and 12 rebounds in the three games before Wednesday night. He is averaging 12.5 points and 7.6 boards per game in his second NBA season. Sullinger is shooting just 37.4 percent from the field in January after hitting 48.7 percent of his attempts in November and 42.9 percent in December. He has been dealing with hand and wrist injuries as of late.

Brad Stevens felt the need to sit down with Sullinger this week to discuss the struggles, while also asking him to take on a bigger role with the rebuilding club.

"First of all, I did say ‘Hey, I realize you are playing through the hand and the finger.’ He’s a tough guy, who wants to play and likes to play. I value that and think highly of him for that," Stevens said.

"One of the things that I just challenged him on was not having to accept being a 22-year-old in the league. We are in a unique situation in that we are asking some of our young guys to be leaders and more vocal in their approach. My talking point with him was, we know you are 22 but you are a mature basketball player and you know the game. For our team to grow we need you to play and be a few years ahead of where you are. It’s not fair to him, but it’s a great opportunity for him.”

Garnett Pinpoints Nets' Turnaround On Becoming Primary Option With Pierce

Jan 29, 2014 3:17 PM

Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce spoke before the season about joining the Brooklyn Nets as secondary options, but both have needed to increase their roles due to injury problems.

Garnett believes the change in his and Pierce's mindset attributes to the Nets' turnaround, which includes a 10-2 record in January.

“The difference in the way we’re playing is we were thinking secondary as we come in,” Garnett said. “Then Brook [gets hurt], Deron’s been beat up, and we’ve had to be primaries now. When you’re secondary, which [we were for] the first time in our careers, you take a step back. You’re not as forceful … you don’t want to step on everybody’s toes.

"We’re thinking like primaries, we’re out here trying to be aggressive. I think guys on the team are looking for us to be that. I don’t know. I guess the mindset of coming here helping versus being it, is just a difference. We’ve come out with the competitive nature that people know us to be. We’re not asking any questions and our team is looking for us to be that. To lead with that leadership, and that’s the difference.”

Courtney Lee Praised For Spacing Floor, Grizzlies' Surge

Jan 29, 2014 10:43 AM

The Memphis Grizzlies have a 7-2 record since acquiring Courtney Lee in a trade with the Boston Celtics and 5-1 since the return of Marc Gasol.

Lee is shooting 55.6 percent from the field as a member of the Grizzlies.

“Courtney’s been a big addition for us,” said point guard Mike Conley. “He adds some scoring, he adds some defense, athleticism. He has a high basketball IQ and he’s been able to pick up things fairly quickly. I think that’s what’s helped us these last couple of weeks.

“Courtney was a huge, huge piece. People overlook him. But it’s key that he’s able to stretch the court for us. With me, him, Mike Miller out there, it gives Zach and Marc more space. Having a lot of guys that could space the court, we didn’t have that going on before. And he can definitely lock up defensively.”

Goran Dragic To Receive $1M Bonus If Named To All-Star Game

Jan 28, 2014 10:53 AM

Goran Dragic has excellent All-Star credentials as one of two players in the NBA averaging at least 19 points on 49 percent shooting and six assists per game with LeBron James being the other.

“If they put me there, I’ll probably be the happiest guy in the whole world,” Dragic said. “For the first five seasons, I couldn’t even imagine or think about that I could be there. If that happens, I think I’m going to cry or something.”

Dragic was so confident in his abilities that he negotiated a $1 million bonus for making an All-Star Game in his 2012 contract with the Suns.
