NCAA Gives Indiana Three Years Of Probation

Indiana University will receive three years probation from the NCAA for recruiting violations during the tenure of former coach Kelvin Sampson.

The school will not be further penalized.

The infractions committee accepted Indiana's self-administered sanctions, including a loss of a scholarship for this season, as sufficient.

Texas Tech Scores School-Record 167 In Victory

Texas Tech easily eclipsed the team's previous highest scoring game in their defeat of East Central on Thursday night in the Legends Classic, winning the game 167-115, the Associated Press is reporting.

Ten players scored in double digits for the Red Raiders.

Michigan Upsets No. 4 UCLA

DeShawn Sims scored 18 points, and Manny Harris added 15 for Michigan in a 55-52 upset of No. 4 UCLA on Thursday night, in the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden, according to an Associated Press report.

The Wolverines pulled off its first win over a top-five ranked team in 11 years.

UNC's Other Tyler Likely Done For Season

Tyler Zeller, a star freshman for North Carolina, is likely to miss the remainder of the season after breaking his left wrist Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-10 Zeller suffered multiple fractures in his wrist when he landed on it late in the Tar Heels' 77-58 win over Kentucky, according to a source close to the situation.

Zeller, who had started the last two games in place of Tyler Hansbrough, was injured when he missed a breakaway dunk and came down on his hand.

"It doesn't look good; it doesn't give us a good feeling right now," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said after the game.

Top-Ranked Recruit Xavier Henry Picks Memphis

Xavier Henry, the top-ranked player in the ESPNU 100, announced Tuesday morning he will join his brother at Memphis for the 2009-10 season.

"Ultimately, playing with my brother and keeping the family together helped make my decision," said Henry of Putnam City High in Oklahoma City. "My parents are okay with it; we're together."

Kansas Signs Standout Guard From Vegas

Elijah Johnson, an elite shooting guard from Las Vegas, has signed a letter of intent with Kansas.

The 6-foot-2 Johnson joins 6-8 Thomas Robinson of Washington, D.C., as the two fall signees for the Jawhawks.

"Right now, Elijah is not a true point guard," said Kansas Coach Bill Self. "He is a scoring, fast, active guard. He can play point but he is more of a combo than a point. We think his potential is very high and he has a chance to be a terrific player. Athletically, he will have very few equals."

Pete Newell Passes Away At 93

Pete Newell, who led the California Golden Bears to a national championship in 1959, died Monday at the age of 93.

Mr. Newell died at the Del Mar, San Diego County home of Earl Shultz, one of the players from his 1959 team. Shultz had served as Newell's caretaker for the past few years. Mr. Newell had surgery in 2005 for the removal of a malignant tumor from a lung.

Newell was a big influence on the entire game, most notably Bobby Knight.

DeRozan Leads No. 21 Southern Cal Past UC Irvine

Highly touted guard DeMar DeRozan scored 14 points in his first game for USC, leading the 21st-ranked Trojans to a 78-55 victory over UC Irvine on Saturday, the Associated Press is reporting.

The high flying DeRozan is the highly touted replacement for O.J. Mayo, who is now in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The McDonald's All-American forward averaged 29.2 points as a senior at nearby Compton High. He cracked the starting lineup Saturday, going 6-of-11 from the floor, making both his free throws and grabbing three rebounds.

"It was exciting," DeRozan said. "I didn't want to rush nothing. I wanted to let the game come to me. My time will come."

Suit Against Sherron Collins Dismissed

A Douglas County District Court judge has dismissed a civil lawsuit against Kansas point guard Sherron Collins.

Collins had been accused of sexually assaulting a 35-year-old woman in an elevator in May 2007.
