Michigan State Hopes To Count On Derrick Nix

Jan 31, 2011 6:42 PM

Michigan State is struggling and they are hoping they can count on Derrick Nix.

Nix scored a season-high nine points, made a career-high three free throws, tripled his previous best with three assists and played a career-high 23 minutes in their win over Indiana on Sunday night.

"I proved something - not to the coaches - but to myself," he said.

Nix, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound sophomore, has battled weight issues since high school.

Coaches Rave About Perry Jones' Versatility

Jan 31, 2011 6:35 PM

Baylor's Perry Jones is a projected top-three pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

"He's a very gifted young man with his size, length and athleticism," said OU coach Jeff Capel. "You match that with skill and he can hurt you in so many different ways.

"He can hurt you on the offensive glass. He can score with his back to the basket. He can face up or get it off the defensive board and push it himself. He can pass it. He can shoot it from 15 to 17 feet consistently and put it on the floor. That arsenal makes him very difficult to defend."

Over 35 scouts attended Baylor's game against Kansas in order to see how Jones would fare against an elite team.

"He's (nearly) 7 foot and can run and jump and put his head above the rim," KU coach Bill Self said after the game. "I'd say he's a pretty good prospect. He's maybe the best prospect in the country from a pure prospect standpoint. There's not a better athlete out there than Perry."

Wally Judge Quits K-State

Jan 31, 2011 5:14 PM

Wally Judge has left Kansas State's team.

“Wally quit the team today,” head coach Frank Martin said. “He’s not happy. I kinda saw it coming because of some of his emotional situations. He just has not been enjoying it.

"He told me today that he thinks it is time for a change.”

Judge averaged 5.5 points and 3.8 rebounds, missing five games earlier in the season for what Martin described as a personal issue.

Kansas and Texas both rose five spots, to Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Pittsburgh, Duke and previously unbeaten San Diego State all slipped two spots after losses, while Notre Dame and Purdue climbed into the top 10.

Ohio State is still undefeated and still No. 1. The Buckeyes (22-0) were a unanimous choice, receiving all 31 first-place votes.

Tennessee To Retire Allan Houston's Number

Jan 31, 2011 12:54 PM

Tennessee will retire the number of Allan Houston in a pregame ceremony on March 6th when the team hosts Kentucky.

Houston will join Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld as the only Tennessee players to have their number retired.

“Allan represents everything the term ‘student-athlete’ is supposed to represent,” athletics director Mike Hamilton said. “He was a very good student, a campus leader and tremendously successful on the court. We are thrilled to have his number hang in the rafters at Thompson-Boling Arena as a tribute to who he was, and is today.”

Houston wore No. 20 for the Volunteers.

Michigan State Outlasts Indiana In Overtime

Jan 31, 2011 6:19 AM

Michigan State edged Indiana for an 84-83 overtime win at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center on Sunday night.

Draymond Green made a go-ahead shot with 29.3 seconds left to give the Spartans the victory.

"Our team needed it more than our program," coach Tom Izzo said. "It was needed. It's been a rough week."

The Spartans avoided their first four-game losing streak in four years after losing to rival Michigan at home for the first time since 1997 and dismissing junior guard Korie Lucious from the team this week.

"I knew how much this game meant, not just to the team, but to coach," Green said. "He was going against his friend, Tom Crean, and it was his birthday."
