Kings Interested In Hiring John Calipari

Jun 30, 2015 12:24 PM

The Sacramento Kings are gauging the potential interest of John Calipari in taking over their head coach and front office jobs.

Calipari has been communicating with owner Vivek Ranadive and other members of the Kings' ownership group in recent weeks.

Kings' ownership understands that it will take a multiyear financial package of $10 million-plus annually to get Calipari to seriously consider leaving Kentucky, sources said.

The Kings' ownership has increased their interest in Calipari as the relationship between DeMarcus Cousins and George Karl has deteriorated.

Calipari coached Cousins at Kentucky for a season in 2009-10.

Calipari has also been linked in the past year to the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Pelicans.

Officials around the NBA have pleaded with Ranadive to stop these sharp changes in direction.

As one league official familiar with Ranadive's mindset told Yahoo Sports, "He's trying to find a magic button to push that'll fix everything."

Vlade Divac was hired just a few months ago in what was initially believed to be a ceremonial position.

"For the 100th time, I have the best basketball coaching position in the world," said Calipari on Twitter. "I am not looking for any other coaching position."

Calipari also explained that he's been in touch with the Ranadive in general about Cousins over the years and about the team's interest in Willie Cauley-Stein.

Bo Ryan To Retire As Wisconsin Head Coach After 15-16 Season

Jun 29, 2015 2:02 PM

Bo Ryan will retire after next season as head coach of Wisconsin.

Ryan's hope is that longtime assistant Greg Gard succeeds him in Madison.

"Back in the spring, in the days after the national championship game, (athletic director) Barry Alvarez and I discussed the possibility of me retiring," Ryan said in the statement. "I've always been told that is not a decision to make right after a season is completed. Barry thankfully encouraged me to take some time to think about it and I have done that. I considered retiring this summer or coaching one more season.

"I've decided to coach one more season with the hope that my longtime assistant Greg Gard eventually becomes the head coach at Wisconsin. I am looking forward to another year with our program, including our players, my terrific assistant coaches, our office staff and everyone who supports Wisconsin basketball here in Madison, around the state and across the country."

Roy Williams Signs Extension With North Carolina Through 2020

Jun 19, 2015 12:45 PM

Roy Williams and North Carolina have agreed upon a two-year extension on his existing deal to run through 2020.

The deal will pay Williams a base salary of between $408,169 this fall and $595,409 in 2019-20, and supplemental compensation ranging from $1.55 million this fall and $1.75 million in the final year. There's also a $40,000 annual expense account, along with outside contracts with Nike and for multimedia obligations.

"I've said I want to coach another six to 10 years, so this contract takes me right to the edge of that, which is good," Williams said in a statement released by the university. "I appreciate the confidence Chancellor Folt and Bubba Cunningham have in my leadership of the basketball program. They've demonstrated that with this contract extension, and with their support over the past several years, which have been a challenge for all who love Carolina as I do. I thank them on behalf of our basketball program and me personally."

Williams has a 332-101 record in his 12 seasons with the Tar Heels.

He said via Paul Coro:
