Tom Izzo To Return To Michigan State Next Season Despite Reported NBA Interest

Apr 30, 2014 2:08 PM

Tom izzo said he will return to coach Michigan State despite reportedly being a candidate for the coach openings of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons.

"First of all, I'm going to be at Michigan State,'' Izzo said Wednesday. "I still listen to things every day in our town about Nick Saban saying I'm not going to be the Alabama coach [when Saban was coach of the Miami Dolphins].

"Nobody knows where any of us are going to be. You have to look at your track record and, over all these years, is this what he's done?"

The Spartans lost in the Elite Eight last season to Connecticut.

"If somebody made me an offer to be the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers that was so good that it would impress everybody, does that mean I would never say never?" Izzo said. "I'm not doing that anymore. I've seen too many people get stung that way.

"Put it this way: I've got a big-time recruit coming in an hour and if I was leaving I wouldn't be recruiting.''

The Lakers are waiting to make a final decision on whether to keep D'Antoni for the 14-15 season, the final season of his contract.

Tennessee Focuses Coaching Search On Michael White

Apr 20, 2014 12:48 PM

Tennessee is focusing its coaching search on Michael White of Louisiana Tech.

The Volunteers are looking for a replacement for Cuonzo Martin, who left the program for California.

A source told CBSSports.com that UT has informally contacted some "A-list" candidates but that the interest hasn't been mutual. Another source told CBSSports.com that at least one potential candidate expressed no interest mostly because Tennessee's roster is in bad shape.

White just finished his third season at Louisiana Tech, where he averaged 28 wins over the past two seasons and finished tied for first both years.

Branden Dawson Returns To Michigan State For Senior Season

Apr 15, 2014 11:48 PM

Branden Dawson announced on Tuesday that he has decided to remain at Michigan State University for his senior season.

Dawson averaged 11.2 points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds for the Spartans in 2013-14. He missed 10 games due to injury, including nine straight with a broken hand from Jan. 25 to Feb. 23.

"I was always pretty sure that I wanted to return for my senior season, but Coach Izzo said he would do what he does for all his players and gather some information," Dawson said in a statement. "As he started making calls, my mom came up and we met with Coach. The three of us decided that as far as my basketball career, both present and future, and the chance to finish my degree, including possibly needing to take just one class during my final semester, that my initial decision was the correct one. I'm vowing to improve my consistency and am looking forward to a great final season."
