Happy New Year! The first full week of basketball in 2011 features a few compelling matchups of top-tier teams as well as some fun individual duels.

Tuesday:

Thunder @ Grizzlies- This one features two young teams still looking to hit their stride. OKC has the benefit of Russell Westbrook carrying them through a rougher than expected patch for Kevin Durant while Memphis has the benefit of interior play that the Thunder just cannot match. Memphis? best chance is to get the Thunder bigs in foul trouble and take control of the game early.

Blazers @ Mavericks- Two teams plagued by the injury bug so far this season, though one has handled it much better thanks to their depth. The injury to Caron Butler could loom large for Dallas in the short term, and Portland provides a strong test for how the team can handle quality opponents in the lull between Butler going out and Rodrigue Beaubois coming back.

Wednesday:

Spurs @ Celtics- A game that features two trendy Finals picks who also stand as the last two non-Lakers teams to win championships. Injuries could loom large in this one as the Celtics are the walking wounded at the moment. The Spurs must take advantage of whatever absences Boston has (Rajon Rondo played Sunday, but Kevin Garnett did not) in order to get a useful road win.

Hawks @ Jazz- Each of these squads is a clear-cut playoff team with room for improvement. Atlanta?s strong defensive front line faces a major test in the form of Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap. However, the Hawks and Mike Bibby must stop Deron Williams in order to win, and that?s a tall task for their guards.

Nuggets @ Clippers- A few years ago, Baron Davis vs. Chauncey Billups would have been a much bigger deal. That said, the array of talent in this game makes it worth keeping an eye on. The Clippers need to win games like this sooner rather than later to build the momentum that will carry them into the future while Denver continues to battle for both a playoff spot and seeding, depending on how their roster looks after the deadline.

Friday:

Spurs @ Pacers- Indy has played good teams tough all year and could be getting the Spurs in a trap game right after their big tilt with the Celtics in Boston. As has been the case all year, Danny Granger and Roy Hibbert need to produce for the Pacers to pull the upset.

Jazz @ Grizzlies- The big man match-ups write the main story here, as each team has a PF/C tandem that will be hell for the other team to guard. Marc Gasol should play a pivotal role on both ends while Memphis must also make sure Utah?s perimeter talent has a rough night.

Hornets @ Lakers- New Orleans and the Lakers have had similar arcs to their respective seasons thus far, albeit in different strata in terms of team quality. Trevor Ariza needs to have a big day against his old team while Emeka Okafor must affect the Lakers? offense from the inside out in order for the Fightin? CP3?s to take one at Staples.

Saturday:

Mavericks @ Magic [Game of the Week]- Two of the deepest teams in the NBA are unsurprisingly two of the best as well. Dirk Nowitzki and Dwight Howard could be the two most different seven footers in the entire league and each must be on his game for his team to have a fighting chance. Dallas must adjust to their injured roster while Orlando works to integrate and maximize their new pieces. If Orlando can use a PF to defend Dirk, they can make this a very winnable game.

Sunday:

Timberwolves @ Spurs- Likely All-Star Kevin Love faces a major test in the form of the greatest Power Forward of All Time. That matchup alone makes this game one to flip over to during commercial breaks in the NFL playoff games.

Hornets @ Jazz- Chris Paul. Deron Williams. Keep an eye on it.

Knicks @ Lakers- One of those games that could go a multitude of directions and carries significance for both teams. There aren?t many games that provide a bigger test for rookie surprise Landry Fields than Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, while LA has to contend with Amare Stoudemire and Raymond Felton when the Knicks are on offense.
