The USA started slowly, but hit their stride at the right time to overcome Puerto Rico 111-100 on day 1 of the World Championships.

Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points, and LeBron James and Kirk Hinrich each added 15 as the U.S. overcame a sluggish start.

"They put us in a position where they had a chance to win," U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Carlos Arroyo scored 23 points to lead Puerto Rico, and Elias Ayuso added 14.

In other games Australia overcame Brazil to win 83-77, and Germany defeated hosts Japan 81-70. Dirk Nowizki led the Germans with 27 points and 10 rebounds.
