Terry Porter is expected to be interviewed by the Suns for a second time later next week, according to The Associated Press.
Porter worked as an assistant coach for the Pistons this season, and the team was eliminated in Game Six of the Eastern Conference Finals by the Celtics on Friday night.
He was the lead assistant for Flip Saunders during the past two seasons and coached the Bucks from 2003-2005.
General Manager Steve Kerr played with Porter during their active playing days and has been looking for a head coach ever since Mike D'Antoni bolted for New York.

Pistons' insiders told ESPN.com that there is a 50-50 chance that Flip Saunders will return to coach the team next season, according to Chris Sheridan.
Saunders has coached Detroit for the last three years and is entering the final year of his contract.
After the Pistons made consecutive trips to the Finals, Saunders has now failed in three-straight appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals.
He now holds the record for most Conference Finals games coached (24) without making a trip to the Finals.

Rasheed Wallace has a rather grim look about the state of the Pistons after their Game Six loss to the Celtics on Friday night, according to The Detroit News.
"That's the end, man," Wallace said.
The elimination could be the end of Flip Saunders' coaching tenure and the end of Lindsay Hunter's playing career.
Wallace also has just one year left on his deal.
"You could say it's a lot of things, but like I told the guys, at the end of the day, when we lose, we all look bad," Richard Hamilton said. "We all look bad. We know what it takes to win, and when we don't do it, it's on us."
