Kermit Washington Takes On Asheville Assistant Role

Kermit Washington, a 10-year NBA veteran as a player, has been named to the assistant coaching position with the Asheville Altitude of the NBA’s National Basketball Development League, according to an announcement by NBDL director of basketball operations Chris Alpert and Altitude head coach Joey Meyer. Washington replaces Michael Sanders, who accepted a position with the NBA Player’s Association after 3½ seasons with the Altitude.

“We are very pleased to have Kermit joining our NBDL coaching family,” Alpert said. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the NBA game that will offer valuable learning experiences for the players in Asheville.”

A first-round selection (5th overall) by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1973 NBA Draft, Washington played in 507 regular season games. A native of Washington, D.C., he averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and converted 52.6-percent of his field goal attempts (1,778-3,382). An NBA All-Star selection, Washington also played in nine NBA Playoff games, averaging 8.0 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Washington is also the founder of Project Contact, which in conjunction with his alma mater American University where he was a two-time Academic All-American, provides help to those who need it in the form of medical clinics and orphanages in East Africa. He recently returned from Africa just prior to accepting the post with the Altitude.

“I’m appreciative for the opportunity to work in the Development League. It’s a privilege,” Washington said. “I enjoy working with athletes who work hard, and these guys work hard because they are motivated to get to the next level.”

Washington, who will report to Asheville next week, is one of seven NBDL coaches (of 12) who played in the NBA. Others include Columbus head coach Jeff Malone, Fayetteville head coach Mike Brown, Florida head coach Dennis Johnson, Huntsville head coach Ralph Lewis and Flight assistant Roy Rogers, as well as Roanoke assistant coach Chucky Brown.

The NBDL, the NBA’s minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA’s umbrella. Thirty-three (33) players have been called up the NBA on 44 separate occasions. Nine former NBDL coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 29 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league’s inaugural season in November 2001. Six additional front office executives have earned positions with other major league sports.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The NBDL is a source of on-court talent for the NBA’s 30 teams and is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
