Exec: '5 To 7' Teams Are Profitable

NBA commissioner David Stern claims that only half of the teams in the league are making a profit, but an executive believes that only "five to seven" are doing well.

"If you are alive in this world and you have access to that ancient form of communication - the newspaper, which I do and I have - you can't help reading the headlines with what's going on," Stern said. " ... So if you're having a business discussion, you just have to understand what's going on in the world around you, and we did that. That said, the owners were remarking upon the strength of the sports business and the value that it provides."

One team executive told Newsday on Thursday that owners are worried about the economic downturn and might be inclined to let the current CBA with the NBA Players Association expire after the 2010-11 season rather than extend it.

That executive said only "five to seven" NBA teams are profitable.

"You're going to have owners pushing for a better deal," said the executive. "This is one of the years the NBA is worried that overall revenues may be a little bit down."

Stern Confident Best Players Will Stay In NBA

NBA Commissioner David Stern is confident that his best players will remain in the league and not jump to Europe.

Stern wants to hold regular season games overseas but isn't worried that his stars will stay there.

"To the extent that we're asked the question, 'what about a regular-season game?' we decided, 'OK, with the lead-up to the Olympics, we'll pop a regular-season game or two or more'; I don't know exactly how many, over there by the 2012 Olympics," the commissioner said Thursday during his annual preseason conference call.

He downplayed the concern that more players will follow the route of Josh Childress, who signed a three-year deal worth $20 million with the Greek club Olympiakos.

"I guess if they want to induce NBA players at salaries that exceed the budget of the team to play in games that 1,000 to 5,000 people will go to, they're free to do that, and there will be one or two players that will benefit greatly from it," said Stern.

"And it's good if you're a player to know that that option exists," he added.
