Oden Likely To Skip U.S. Training Camp

Greg Oden is leaning toward skipping U.S. training camp next month, possibly ending his chances of playing in the 2008 Olympics.

Oden, the No. 1 pick in the draft, had a tonsillectomy July 14 and was forced to miss the Americans' minicamp last weekend in Las Vegas. He has an invitation to join the team when it reconvenes for training camp on Aug. 15, but said Friday he probably wouldn't be there. "I don't think I am because of my tonsils," Oden told The Associated Press.

Iguodala To Work Out With U.S. Team

Andre Iguodala has caught the attention of USA Basketball.

The 76ers star forward/guard accepted an invitation to practice and scrimmage with the U.S. national team as it prepares for the FIBA Americas Championships, the Olympic qualifying tournament scheduled from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2 in Las Vegas.

Iguodala, who led the Sixers with a scoring average of 18.2 points in 76 games, is in a group of eight to 10 young players who will join the national team for its pretournament camp Aug. 15 to 21 in Las Vegas.

That group includes Al Jefferson, of the Boston Celtics, and Brandon Roy, of the Portland Trail Blazers. Former Villanova star Randy Foye, now with the Minnesota Timberwolves, has been on a list of potential invitees, but reportedly has had some problems with tendinitis after playing for the Wolves' summer-league team.

"The idea is to put players in the pipeline as it relates to USA Basketball, looking ahead to the [2012] Olympics," Colangelo said. "People feel that Andre is a very talented young player who has an awful lot of upside, and that he blossomed."

Roy's Birthday Party Marred By Melee

One man was arrested during a melee outside a downtown club that marred NBA player Brandon Roy's birthday party.

Several other NBA players were at the party at Level 5 on Fifth Avenue North early Saturday, including Will Conroy, a former teammate of Roy's at Washington and Garfield High School, Chris Wilcox of the Sonics and Jason Terry, a former Franklin High School star now with the Dallas Mavericks.

Roy, the NBA Rookie of the Year last season for the Portland Trail Blazers, turned 23 Monday, but celebrated with a party Friday night, according to Conroy.

Conroy, a guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, said the NBA players weren't involved in the altercation, which police said involved more than 100 people and spilled onto the street outside the club.

"We were nowhere close to that," Conroy said. "I didn't even know what took place. It wasn't us. We don't get in the middle of that stuff."
