Spurs: Fractured Eye Socket Shouldn't Impede Elson

Spurs center Francisco Elson will undergo surgery next week to repair a fractured left orbital socket, an injury sustained while he was playing for the Dutch national team.

Elson was fitted with a protective mask and played for the Dutch against Slovakia on Saturday, but struggled with double vision during the game. That prompted the Dutch team's medical staff to send him to an eye specialist in Rotterdam. When the bone scan revealed the fracture, the Dutch team's doctors recommended that Elson return to San Antonio to consult with the Spurs' medical staff.

The Spurs said Elson should be able to resume limited basketball drills one week after his surgery and should be cleared for full-contact activity my mid-to-late September. He will have to wear a protective facemask during the entire 2007-08 season, however.

"I feel great," Elson said on Thursday. "It looks like I'll be here in San Antonio for a while and then maybe I will go back (to Europe) and support my (Dutch) team. The injury was just unfortunate."

Spurs Seek "Venue Tax" Funds For Arena Upgrades

Arguing that upgrades to the AT&T Center are necessary to remain competitive in today's NBA, the San Antonio Spurs want Bexar County taxpayers to reauthorize the "venue tax" that built the arena.

County Judge Nelson Wolff agrees that the four-time champions should get part of the renewed revenue stream — pending voter approval — along with the San Antonio River Improvement Project, amateur sports fields and a new performing arts center.

The venue tax on hotel rooms and car rentals is set to expire when the AT&T Center is paid off, sometime between 2009 and 2012.

The Spurs have a $164 million wish list of projects for the arena — built five years ago for $193.5 million from mostly public money — but team management is working with the Commissioners Court to whittle that amount to between $75 million and $100 million.

Spurs Center Elson Breaks Facial Bone In Euro Play

San Antonio Spurs center Francisco Elson left Holland's national team Wednesday after he was diagnosed with a fractured eye socket that is expected to sideline him for six weeks.

Elson sustained the injury from an elbow to the face during the Netherlands' 77-72 European Championship victory over Belarus in Almere, near Amsterdam, last week.

He also played Saturday as the Dutch lost at Slovakia, 80-75, But medical staff became concerned when Elson complained of double vision. On Tuesday, he consulted an eye specialist in Rotterdam, who performed a scan and determined Elson had suffered a fractured orbital socket.

After consulting with the Spurs and their medical staff, the national team sent Elson home to undergo treatment from the club's doctors.
