Don Nelson was surprised by the decision of Golden State point guard Baron Davis to opt out of his contract and become a free agent, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

"That's a good word, surprised," Nelson said. "We knew that he could (opt out), but we thought the number was so high that I didn't feel that would happen. I just talked to him a couple of days ago, and he said he was coming back. We thought we were going to be in Maui and play golf, and hopefully we still will."

After making the playoffs in 2007, and stunning the top-seeded Mavericks in the first round, the Warriors failed to make the playoffs this season despite posting a 48-34 record.

"He must've changed his mind, or something must've happened. That's part of the business. We understand. Hopefully, we'll be a bidder," Nelson added.
