Steve Mills has made the initial contact to Vogel's representatives.
In six seasons as Indiana Pacers' coach, Vogel had a 250-181 regular-season record and a 31-30 playoff record.
Vogel worked one season as an advance scout for the Los Angeles Lakers during Phil Jackson's tenure.
Jackson was believed to be deciding between Kurt Rambis and David Blatt before Vogel became available.
