While the Stanford athletic department was shocked when Trent Johnson bolted for LSU this week, it was something the coach was considering for quite some time, according to the Mercury News.

According to sources, Johnson wanted to retire at Stanford, but the athletic department was in no rush to get an extension done, and their offers came up short on length.  They began talking about a new contract in September, and Johnson was bothered by the lack of progress.

Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby spent part of Thursday calling his basketball contacts around the country, asking for names to add to the list of 20 or 25 in his head.

"We don't have any idea what we're going to do," a Stanford source told me Thursday night.
