After suffering a right toe injury in a December game against Georgia Tech, X-rays discovered Kyrie Irving has an extra sesamoid bone leading up to his toe.

Irving said that's what caused the injury to begin with.

He didn't know about his condition until after he was hurt. He said that when his toe bent back as he started to drive the baseline against Butler, the ligaments connecting the bones were torn.

"When I looked at the X-rays, it was a lot more complicated than I thought it was," he said.

Nike constructed a special shoe with metal shakes above and below his foot to protect the toe from bending back.
