Connecticut defeated Kentucky by a 56-55 final in the 2011 NCAA Tournament semifinal to setup a date against Butler for the National Championship.

Butler defeated VCU in the earlier game 70-62 to reach the championship game for the second consecutive season.

Kemba Walker had 18 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds.

“Our defense eventually won it for us,” Jim Calhoun said. “Along with the best player in America.”

Butler was led by Shelvin Mack, who scored 24 points on 11 shots.

Butler star Matt Howard said that the Bulldogs “almost expected to win.” He added: “That’s the way our team had prepared. Tonight, it’s just like any game, weirdly enough.”
